Description

This is one of Brenner's earliest known medals and is rarely seen for sale. Also known as Smedley 15, it is catalogued as #1 in the Catalog of Medals and Plaques by Victor D. Brenner published by the Grolier Club in 1907.

The circular medal measures 35.3mm in diameter and was struck in bronze by the artist. No mintage is reported.

Victor David Brenner was at the very beginning of his career when he made this medal while he was working for Robert Stoll. It was used as a store card to show off some of the services that Stoll could provide.

The circular medal measures 44.7mm in diameter and was struck in white metal by Robert Stoll. No mintage is reported. It is referenced in Smedley's catalogue as #6.

This is the 10th medal issued by the American Numismatic Society.

The medal commemorates the opening of the new St. Luke's Hospital building in New York City. St. Luke's Hospital was founded in 1858 by Dr. William Muhlenberg, an Episcopalian clergyman, as a private hospital. In 1896 it relocated from its original site at 5th Avenue and 54th Street to Amsterdam Avenue and 113th Street. In 1979 St. Luke's merged with Roosevelt Hospital.

Victor David Brenner cut the dies for this medal (his first for the ANS) by hand. The reported mintage for this medal is 1 piece in gold, 10 in silver, and 89 in bronze.

Around, PHOTOGRAPHERS ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA; to right of figure, 1897; below, to left and right of Daguerre, LOUIS - DAGUERRE; at end of winding banner, crudely incused, R.STOLL NY.; below, in tiny letters, .D.BRENNER NY.

The otherwise blank reverse bears issuer's mark ROBERT STOLL / N.Y. / 19 JOHN ST.

The medal celebrates the father of photography, Louis Daguerre, as well as photography itself as a union of science and art. Louis Daguerre, building on work by countryman Joseph-Nicéphore Niépce had developed a process that allowed the relatively reliable and inexpensive creation of "daguerrotypes". In 1839 the French government awarded pensions to both Daguerre and Niépce's son and they published the process to make it available almost free of restrictions. Thus, the field of photography was born.

By 1897 the old Daguerrotype had already been defeated by newer, less expensive technologies. The 1850's saw the arrival of inexpensive ambrotypes, quick tintypes, and paper prints from glass negatives. In the late 1860's, inventors Louis Ducos du Hauron and Charles Cros unveiled their nearly identical ideas for making full-color prints on paper. Yet the field was still young and certainly not easily accessible to the wider public. In the late 19th century, photography was still a developing field, both artistically and in terms of science and engineering, and the medal acknowledges this perfectly.

This medal is somewhat crowded but nevertheless attractive due to its heavy ornamentation and whimsical lettering. In 1897 Victor David Brenner worked as a die cutter for the New York seal and die maker, Robert Stoll. Under Stoll's employment, he produced dozens of medals, including the Society of Cincinnati Medal, the Church of the Most Holy Redeemer Jubilee Medal, a Beethoven Medal, and at least six athletic, award medals.

The medal measures 54mm in diameter and was struck in bronze by Robert Stoll of New York.

Sterling silver

Description

The arrowhead-shaped badge bears conjoined busts of the early French missionary Father Vogue holding up crucifix and Native American brave, facing left; beaver on branch at top. In ark over busts, LAKE GEORGE REGATTA ASSOCIATION; in exergue, AWARDED TO

The reverse is blank except for maker's mark and metal mark.

The badge is suspended from a clasp formed by two crossed paddles.

In the summer of 1880 a meeting of canoeists at Lake George N.Y., led to the formation of the American Canoe Association (ACA). In 1886 ACA introduced the first Paddling Trophy Race, held on Lake George, NY, called camps, as the spectators and contestants actually camped out in large walled tents. Mr. Johnston, a Canadian in a Canadian canoe, lost to Mr. Rice of Springfield, NY.

The badge measures 40mm x 63mm and was struck in bronze, silver and gold by Robert Stoll of New York City. No mintages are reported.

The typothetae [of the City of New York] were the master type setters who took understandable pride in their craft and chose to celebrate a dinner with two great Americans as the "patron saints" of their profession: Benjamin Franklin and Theodore Low de Vinne. Benjamin Franklin requires no introduction, but Theodore Low de Vinne might be a less familiar name. De Vinne was a master typographer and typesetter who became famous for his "Century Roman" typeface and for being a co-founder of the Grolier Club. He was also a founder and the first president of the United Typothetae of America, a predecessor of the Printing Industries of America.

The plaquette was struck in bronze and measures 64mm x 56.9mm. No mintage is reported.

In 1902 Prince Henry of Prussia visited the United States to take delivery of a schooner yacht for his brother, Emperor Wilhelm II of Germany. The yacht was christened Meteor III by Alice Roosevelt on February 25, 1902.

This medal is the 14th official issue of the American Numismatic Society. While the idea for the medal came from the ANS' Edward Dean Adams, Victor David Brenner himself underwrote the issue, accepting all the risk with the exception of the material cost of the four pieces struck in gold. He graciously allowed the ANS to sell as many silver pieces as it could and retain all the profit thereof.

The circular medal measures 69mm in diameter. The mintage is reported as 4 pieces in gold, 301 in silver, 2 in copper and 1 in aluminum.

The obverse bears half figure of Vespucci, half right, head right, holding a partially unrolled map ; to the right is a map of the New World, taken from the then recently discovered map of Martin Waldseemüller. Amerigo Vespucci (1454-1512) was an Italian explorer, financier, navigator and cartographer who first demonstrated that Brazil and the West Indies did not represent Asia's eastern outskirts as initially conjectured from Columbus' voyages, but instead constituted an entirely separate landmass hitherto unknown to people of the Old World.
