by Max Peinlich
Pin It...Create Flipcard...Contact Me...
Description

The plaque bears bust of Lincoln facing right. To his left, ABRAHAM / LINCOLN / 1809·1865; signed at lower right, M·Peinlich.

Max Peinlich was a native Austrian who came to the U.S. for the Louisiana Purchase Exhibition in 1904. His medallic efforts seem to have centered around the very popular Lincoln theme.

The circular plaque measures 155mm in diameter and was cast by the Griffoul Foundry of Newark, New Jersey. It is marked on the reverse with the number 66 or 99, indicating that it was part of a limited edition, but no edition size is reported.

Description

The medal's obverse bears portrait of Abraham Lincoln, facing right. To his left, torch. At left, 1809 / 1865; around right, LINCOLN. Signed under torch at left, © DOUGLAS VOLK / DEL. / CHAS. L. HINTON · / Sc.

The reverse bears oak wreath around center field. At top of center field, LINCOLN / · ESSAY · MEDAL ·  / · AWARDED · TO ·

Douglas Volk created a Lincoln portrait that shows him gaunt, almost skeletally thin, a sad resolve readiating from his expression. Hinton translated the design into a beautiful medal.

This medal is cataloged as King 892.  A variant with a date of February 12, 1924 exists and is cataloged as King 891.

The circular medal was struck in bronze by the Whitehead & Hoag Company of Newark, New Jersey. No mintage is reported.

New York World's Fair Land of Lincoln Pavilion Medal
1964
Pin It...Create Flipcard...Contact Me...
Description

The medal's obverse bears bust of Lincoln, facing, within thick border.

The reverse bears the seal of the state of Illinois. Around, LAND OF LINCOLN PAVILION / 1964 NEW YORK WORLD'S FAIR 1965

Illinois had its own pavilion at the New York World's Fair of 1964-65 and this medal was one of the commemoratives offered there.

The medal is fairly two-dimensional, the recessed areas of the relief together with some patina used to provide dark patches, and it almost looks like it was etched.  The edge is cross-hatched.

The circular medal measures 69.1mm in diameter.  I have no information about artist, mint or mintage.  Any additional information would be appreciated.
