Description

The medal's obverse bears portrait of Florence Nightingale, slight left. Around, THE WALTER BURNS SAUNDERS MEMORIAL MEDAL; to her left, FLORENCE / NIGHTINGAL / 1858; signed and dated to her right, (RTM monogram) / '29; at bottom, FOUNDED BY / W·L·SAUNDERS·2ND

The reverse bears trophy over laurel branch and cartouche. At top, AWARDED TO; in cartouche, THOSE WHO HAVE DEVOTED THEIR / PROFESSIONAL LIVES TO SYMPATHETIC AND / INTELLIGENT BEDSIDE NURSING · APRIL, 1938; across lower half, DISTINGUISHED / FOR / SERVICE / IN / THE CAUSE OF NURSING

The circular medal was struck in bronze by the Medallic Art Company of New York. No mintage is reported.
