1959
by Ralph J. Menconi
Pin It...Create Flipcard...Contact Me...
Description

The medal's obverse bears bust of Willard F. Rockwell, facing. Around top, WILLARD F. ROCKWELL; around bottom, 45 YEARS AN / AUTOMOTIVE PARTS PIONEER; signed under truncation, R·J·MENCONI

The reverse bears corporate logo with 50 YEARS in circle. Around, ROCKWELL-STANDARD CORPORATION / 1909 - 1959

Willard F. Rockwell (1888-1978) was born in Boston, Massachusetts and attended the local public schools before attending MIT. In the years between 1909 and 1915 he was chief engineer for several small companies and developed a keen interest in the automotive business. During World War I he was a civilian specialist in the Army Quartermaster Corps. In 1919 he started his first company in Oshkosh, Wisconsin and sold it nine years later, staying on as its manager and a director of the Timken-Detroit Axle Company. He became president only four years later and merged it with several small companies he controlled. In 1958 he renamed the large company to Rockwell Standard Corp.  Rockwell-Standard eventually became a major player in aviation and the space industry and is now called Rockwell International.

The circular medal measures 69.9mm in diameter and was struck in bronze by the Medallic Art Company of New York. No mintage is reported.

Centaur Medallion
1987
by John Cook
Pin It...Create Flipcard...Contact Me...
Description

The medallion's obverse bears a centaur playing the pipe. Signed at bottom, (JC monogram) 87

The reverse bears dedication, TO CAROL / FROM JOHN

The parallels between this medal and the Brookgreen Gardens member medal John Cook had created one year earlier are unmistakable.  Cook was definitely in a "greek mythology" phase at that time of his life!

The medal was cast in bronze and measures approximately 91mm in both dimensions. No mintage is reported, but the dedication is an indication that this might be a unique cast for a person who was important to the artist.

Description

The medal's obverse bears walking immigrant family, faces turned upwards in silent awe. Across, the famous lines from Emma Lazarus: GIVE ME / YOUR TIRED, YOUR / HUDDLED - MASSES / YEARN-ING TO / BREAT-HE FREE. / THE WR-ETCHED / REFUSE - OF YOUR / TEEMING - SHORE. SE/ND THEESE, - THE HOME/LESS, TEM-PEST-TOST / TO ME. - I LIFT / MY LAMP - BESIDE / THE GO-LDEN / DOOR. Signed at bottom right, (JOV monogram)

The medal's reverse bears Statue of Liberty's head in center; at its right, 19 / 86; signed over left shoulder with (JOV monogram); twelve segments with months around.

In reference to the Statue of Liberty's nickname, this medal is also known as the "Mother of Exiles" medal.

The calendar panel was engraved by John Oliva.  Jovine designed and sculpted both sides but left the area of the calendar panel empty in what is called a "reserve." Oliva then added the calendar panel with all the month name and number lettering.

This circular circular medal measures 76mm in diameter and was struck in bronze and possibly silver by the Medallic Art Company of Danbury, Connecticut.

Many thanks to CJ Swinko for the excellent photos.

New York International Airport Medal
1948
by Julio Kilenyi
Pin It...Create Flipcard...Contact Me...
Bronze
Description

The medal's obverse bears a winged plaque and lots of lext. Around top, THE PORT OF NEW YORK AUTHORITY; at top of center, NEW YORK / INTERNATIONAL / AIRPORT; on plaque, DEDICATION / JULY 31, 1948, followed by long list of names and titles; plaque surrounded by airport statistics.

The medal's reverse bears an aireal view of runway layout with clouds at top and sea at bottom. Around bottom edge, © NEW YORK INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT; signed over shoreline at left, KILENYI

New York International Airport, now known as John F. Kennedy airport, was built to relieve LaGuardia Airport which was overcrowded soon after opening in 1939. Construction began in 1943, and about $60 million was initially spent of governmental funding, but only 1,000 acres (400 ha) of land on the site of the Idlewild Golf Course were earmarked for use.

The project was renamed Major General Alexander E. Anderson Airport in 1943, after a Queens resident who had commanded a Federalized National Guard unit in the southern United States and died in late 1942. In March 1948 the New York City Council changed the name to New York International Airport, Anderson Field, but the common name was "Idlewild" until 1963.

The Port Authority leased the JFK property from the City of New York in 1947 and maintains this lease today. The first airline flight from JFK was on July 1, 1948; the opening ceremony was attended by then U.S. President Harry S. Truman. The Port Authority cancelled foreign airlines' permits to use LaGuardia, forcing them to move to JFK during the next couple of years.

This medal measures 76mm (3in) in diameter and was struck in bronze and silver by the Robbins Company of Attleboro, Massachusetts. A silver variant was part of the Marqusee collection.

Eagle Head Recognition Medal
Pin It...Create Flipcard...Contact Me...
Description

The uniface medal bears eagle head, facing right.

This beautiful medal appears to be a stock design that is used by the Medalcraft Mint for customized recognition medals. A dedication or corporate logo can be added to the empty space below the beak to create a "one of a kind" medal.

Regardless of its prosaic usage, the medal bears a beautifully designed eagle head that happens to please even more due to the absence of corporate messaging.

The circular medal measures 76.3mm in diameter and was struck in bronze by the Medalcraft Mint of Green Bay, Wisconsin. No mintage is reported.
