This medal's obverse bears two heads facing opposite directions that intersect in the middle.
The reverse bears signature and edition: H. TOVISH 12/100
Tovish's design symbolizes the dehumanization of our modern culture with mechanical forms.
The medal was developed as part of a Christmas gift promotion for Art in America, a magazine that wanted to offer its readers something that was not available anywhere else. The promotion combined medallic objects from six leading modern sculptors and was managed by Edward Albert Bryant, the curator of modern art at New York's Whitney Museum.

The model bears portrait of young boy facing right. To right, CHIP; signed around left, R.B. HOFFMAN
Hoffman was Ruth's married name and I don't know whether Chip was her son, a relative, or totally unrelated. I also don't know whether this design model was ever converted to a finished medal. It would have deserved it.
This irregularly circular model is inset into a wooden display board.

James Duncan (d. 1849) graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1834. Two years later, he served in the Florida war against the Seminole Indians and commanded an artillery company during the war with Mexico from 1846 to 1848. His heroics in the latter conflict caught the attention of army officials, and Duncan rose rapidly from captain to colonel. In late 1848, President James Polk appointed Colonel Duncan inspector general of the United States Army.
The medal was given to him just before his first tour of inspection when he visited New York. He died only months later from Yellow Fever which he contracted from troopers in Mobile, Alabama.
The circular medal measures 53.4mm in diameter and was struck in bronze by the U.S. Mint. No mintage is reported, but the large die crack would argue for a small production run.
