Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts 10th Anniversary Medal
1972
by Joseph Di Lorenzo
Pin It...Create Flipcard...Contact Me...
Description

This medal's obverse bears Sir Henry Moore's Reclining Figure sculpture.

The reverse shows view of Lincoln Center with court yard and fountain.

The Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts was built as part of Robert Moses' program of urban renewal in the 1950s and 1960s. Civic leaders led by John D. Rockefeller III contracted famous architects to design Lincoln Center and rejuvenate and reenrgize the previously blighted neighborhood around Lincoln Square. Today, Lincoln Center hosts the New York Philharmonic, the Metropolitan Opera, and the New York City Ballet and the neighborhood is one of New York City's cultural hubs.

The medal celebrates the 10th anniversary of the opening of the complex's first building, the David Geffen Hall, in 1962.

The circular medal measures 76mm in diameter and was struck in bronze by the Medallic Art Company of New York. No mintage is reported.

North, Central, and South American Exposition New Orleans Medal
1885-86
by Peter L. Krider
Pin It...Create Flipcard...Contact Me...
Description

The medal's obverse bears buffalo on mound, palm tree and four female figures representing the three native American and colonial European cultures. In exergue, THE THREE AMERICAS; above exergue at right, PHILA.

The reverse bears wreath of corn, cotton and tobacco around legend. In center field, AWARDED BY / THE / NORTH CENTRAL / AND / SOUTH AMERICAN / EXPOSITION / 1885 - 86 / NEW ORLEANS.

This is a very handsome exposition medal. I find it particularly interesting how the design incorporates four figures instead of the more commonly expected three.  Thus the figures become representative of  culture rather than geography.

The circular medal measures 73.2mm in diameter. No mintage is known.

Boy Fishing
1934
by Herbert Adams
Pin It...Create Flipcard...Contact Me...
Golden bronze with red-brown patina
Description

The obverse bears a nude boy with a fishing rod who just caught a little fish and the the first half of an Oliver Wendell Holmes quotation: "OH WHAT ARE THE PRIZES WE PERISH TO WIN."

The reverse bears a jumping trout with the second half of the quote: "TO THE FIRST LITTLE SHINER WE CAUGHT WITH A PIN."

In the artists own words:

"Beneath these whimsical words of the poet runs a vein of seriousness. I have not been unmindful of that undercurrent. A boy fishing is a common sight. But a boy's hopes, aspirations, struggles - these are the things that build the world's epics."

This medal was chosen as the 9th issue of the prestigious Society of Medalists series. It measures 73mm in diameter and was produced by the Medallic Art Company of New York. The reported mintage is 1,207 pieces in bronze and 100 in silver.

San Diego Exposition Ford V-8 Medal
1935
by Rene P. Chambellan
Pin It...Create Flipcard...Contact Me...
Description

The obverse bears the classic Ford V8 logo with the digit "8" formed by the letter "O" from FORD and a larger circle underneath. Around bottom, SAN DIEGO - 1935

The reverse bears legend · FORD · 1935 around centeral circle, surrounded by turbine-like pattern.

Ford introduced its flathead V8 engine in 1932, just in time for the Chicago World's Fair and issued a token with a similar obverse for that earlier exhibition. While the V8 engine was not new, it was Ford's first 8-cylinder engine for the American mass market and was an important milestone in Ford's history. The basic engine design remained in service till 1953.

The Ford V8 logo is one of the classic art deco logos that succeed through their simplicity and elegance. It combines a technical term with a graphical representation that symbolizes high speed.

The medal measures 28.5mm in diameter and was struck in nickel.
