New York World's Fair Land of Lincoln Pavilion Medal
1964
Pin It...Create Flipcard...Contact Me...
Description

The medal's obverse bears bust of Lincoln, facing, within thick border.

The reverse bears the seal of the state of Illinois. Around, LAND OF LINCOLN PAVILION / 1964 NEW YORK WORLD'S FAIR 1965

Illinois had its own pavilion at the New York World's Fair of 1964-65 and this medal was one of the commemoratives offered there.

The medal is fairly two-dimensional, the recessed areas of the relief together with some patina used to provide dark patches, and it almost looks like it was etched.  The edge is cross-hatched.

The circular medal measures 69.1mm in diameter.  I have no information about artist, mint or mintage.  Any additional information would be appreciated.

U.S. Steel Years of Service Medal
1926
by Julio Kilenyi
Pin It...Create Flipcard...Contact Me...
Description

The obverse bears bust of E. H. Gary, chairman of the United States Steel Corporation. Above, UNITED STATES STEEL CORPORATION; under truncation, signature of E. H. Gary / chairman; over shoulder at left, signed KILENYI.

J. P. Morgan and attorney Elbert H. Gary founded U.S. Steel on March 2, 1901 by combining Andrew Carnegie's Carnegie Steel Company with Gary's Federal Steel Company and William Henry "Judge" Moore's National Steel Company. In its first full year of operation, U.S. Steel made 67 percent of all the steel produced in the United States. The government attempted to break the company up using anti-trust laws but ultimately failed. Global competition and changes in markets led to the company's decline and eventual removal from the Dow Jones Insustrial Index in 2014. The company still exists but is a shadow of its former self.

The reverse bears image of four steelworkers in front of factory and locomotive. On left, 1943; above, 25 YEARS SERVICE; at right, E. J. & E. RY. Co.; in exergue, dedication to G.R. JACKSON; under workers' feet, STERLING - W.&H.CO;

The medal measures 44mm in diameter and was struck by the Whitehead & Hoag Company of Newark, New Jersey. The years of service come in 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35 and 50 years of service variants. Watch fobs are also known.

Inspiration - Aspiration
1944
by Richard H. Recchia
Pin It...Create Flipcard...Contact Me...
Silver
Description

The obverse bears herm-type male bust facing upward against massive stylized wings. Around, ALL - PASSES ART ALONE ENDURING STAYS TO US; in lower left field, THE BUST / OUTLASTS / THE / THRONE; in exergue, THE COIN TIBERIUS; at left, incuse, R.H.RECCHIA / ©

The reverse bears nude youth leaping with outstretched arms into starry sky; hills clouds, and rays in background. Around, TOO LOW THEY BUILD WHO - BUILD BENEATH THE STARS

This medal is one of the two war-time SOM medals that were originally struck in silver because copper was largely dedicated to war needs. Apparently, 57 50mm-diameter pieces were struck in bronze but even long-time collectors have not seen any. Some were later struck in the 1970's.

Recchia drew his own inspiration for this medal from poetry, namely Austin Dobson's "Ars Victrix' for the quotes on the obverse and Edward Young's "Night Thoughts" on the reverse. Recchia wrote in the brochure accompanying the medal:

"The bust ... shows the man's mind stretching upwards, to and beyond the flight of the wings of imagination and passing time and depicting man's dreams of seeking higher realms of inspiration."

Recchia's combined message was devoid of war-time propaganda and very humanistic at its core. Or maybe the very fact that it was so humanistic made it a very effective war-time message for an audience that was fighting for the survival of western civilization.

On a personal note, this is the medal that inspired me to become a medal collector when I first saw it on display at the Yale University Art Gallery. To this day, it remains one of my favorite art medals.

This medal was chosen as the 29th issue of the prestigious Society of Medalists series in 1944. It was first produced in 50mm and was struck in silver by the Medallic Art Company of New York. OVerall, the reported production quantity of this medal is 891 small-diameter silver, 57 small-diameter bronze, 150 large-diameter bronze, and 100 large-diameter silver.

Bronze
Description

The medal's obverse bears bust of Gilbert Stuart, facing left. Around left and right, GILBERT - STUART. Signed under truncation, C.C. WRIGHT F.; at lower edge,  S. ELLIS DEL.

The reverse bears Columbia with American shield on steps crowning two artists, one a painter holding a pallet and brushes, one a sculptor cradling a mallet in the crook of his arm. Around left and right, AMERICAN - ART-UNION; signed and dated on steps, P.P.D.D - C.C.W.F. - 1848

Gilbert Charles Stuart (1755-1828) was an American painter, best known for his portraits. He was born in Rhode Island but practiced his art in Newport, New York, Philadelphia and finally in Boston.  He is buried in the Old South Burial Ground of the Boston Common.

This was the second medal issued by the American Art-Union.

The circular medal measures 64.2mm in diameter and was struck in bronze, white metal, and silver at the U.S. Mint. No mintage is reported for any variant but it is believed that the one silver piece that is known (Stacks & Bowers, Americana Auction 2005) might be unique.
