Albert Gallatin Medallion
1955
by Paul Manship
Pin It...Create Flipcard...Contact Me...
Description

The medallion's obverse bears bust of Gallatin facing right.

The reverse bears dedication in large letters, ALBERT GALLATIN / from / his friend / Paul Manship / March / 1955

Albert Gallatin (1881-1952) was an American collector, painter, and critic who founded the Gallery of Living Art at New York University in 1927. Nine years later he renamed his institution the Museum of Living Art. The Gallery of Living Art was one of the first in America to display works by contemporary European artists such as Pablo Picasso and Fernand Léger. In 1937, Gallatin became a member of the American Abstract Artists Group, which encouraged American artists to "break the rules" as European modernists had done.

Gallatin and Manship both had strong ties to New York City and Massachusetts, so it is not surprising that they knew each other well. Though Manship was a strong and lifelong traditionalist in his work, he obviously admired Gallatin and his passion for modern art. The inscription on the reverse reflects the tradition of artists dedicating works to one another out of friendship and professional respect.

The circular medallion measures 92.5mm in diameter and was cast in bronze. No mintage is reported.

Joseph Medal
1969
by Elizabeth Weistrop
Pin It...Create Flipcard...Contact Me...
Silver
Description

The medal's obverse shows Joseph dressed in Egyptian style with bushels of grain and baskets of fruit at his feet; sun to his left. At top left, JOSEPH; signed in exergue, © E. WEISTROP - 1969

The reverse bears Star of David, symbols and names from all twelve medals. In center, THE / TWELVE / TRIBES OF / ISRAEL

Joseph was Jacob's eleventh-born and favorite son, the first he had with Rachel. Joseph gained his brothers' envy and hate because he was Jacob's favorite and because of a dream he shared with them, in which he allegorically saw them submitting to him.  They conspired against him and sold him into slavery, where he eventually became the ruler of all Egypt. Jacob's blessing on Joseph whom he likened to a bull and a wild colt exceeded that of all his brothers. As the comment for this medal quotes:

"May all those blessings be a crown upon the head of Joseph... and a chain upon him that was the ruler of Egypt."

This is the eleventh medal in Elizabeth Weistrop's Twelve Tribes of Israel series. The circular medal measures 43mm in diameter and was struck in bronze and silver by the Medallic Art Company of New York. No mintages are reported.

Description

The medal's obverse bears bust of Abraham Jacobi facing left. Around top, A · JACOBI · MD; around bottom, · M C M X · ; signed under truncation, MOWBRAY CLARKE

Dr. Abraham Jacobi (1830-1919) was a German physician and pioneer of pediatrics, opening the first children's clinic in the United States. After studying medicine in Germany, he was involved in the 1848 revolution and served time in jail before leaving his home country for England in 1853. In exile, he lived with Karl Marx and Freidrich Engels before setting sail for the U.S. in 1854.

To date, he is the only foreign-born president of the American Medical Association. He helped found the American Journal of Obstetrics and is regarded as the Father of American Pediatrics.

The circular medal measures 50.9mm in diameter and was struck in bronze by the Medallic Art Company of New York. No mintage is reported.

Charles Lindbergh New York to Paris Medal
1927
by Charles Louis Hinton

Bronze
Description

The medal's obverse bears portrait of young Lindbergh, slight right, before sea and sky, sun setting at left. Around upper right, C * LINDBERGH *; across, NEW · YORK - · TO PARIS · IN · / · 33½ HOURS · / MAY 20 · 21 / · 1927 · ; signed above left shoulder, © H

The reverse bears airplane over sea and setting sun, flanked by wings emanating from shell at bottom center. Around top, · · NEW · YORK · TO · PARIS · ; at bottom, · · · c 1927 H · ·

This is one of the more beautiful Lindbergh commemorative medals.  Hinton shows his soft touch in a portrait that reflects both youth and boundless optimism.

The medal measures 70mm in diameter and was struck in bronze and silver. No mintages are reported though I have only encountered the small bronze and the silver medal once, so they appear to be rarer than the large bronze.
