1931
by Leo Ziemssen Moll

Description

This uniface plaquette shows a Japanese student, facing away towards rising sun, with arms lifted high in gesture of invocation; ocean and Japaneses buildings in background. Along left edge, Japanese characters; aling right edge, JOCHI = UNIVERSITY; signed at top right, Leo Z Moll

Sophia University, or Jochi Daigaku as it is called in Japanese, was founded by Jesuits in 1913. It began with the mission to build a bridge between Japan and the Christian West. It is located in the heart of Tokyo and still operates as a private Jesuit university bringing together the best of the Western and Asian intellectual traditions.

This handsome little plaquette came with a brochure that matched the plaquette in size. It reads:

The single Japanese is symbolic of the nation. The sun represents the light and guidance that Jochi University hopes to bring to the Country of the Rising Sun.

National Surety Company Silver Jubilee Medal
1929
by Jeno Juszko
Pin It...Create Flipcard...Contact Me...
Description

The medal's obverse bears Joyce's bust facing left. At left and right edge, JOYCE SILVER - JUBILEE; at left and right, 1904 / 1929; signed on neck, J.J.

The medal's reverse bears displayed eagle on stylized sun; panel with wreath at bottom of sun. Around, NATIONAL SVRETY COMPANY / FOR DISTINGVISHED SERVICE; on sun, WORLDS / LARGEST / SURETY / COMPANY; in panel, AWARDED TO; inscribed to J.C. MURPHY

The edge is marked with MEDALLIC ART CO. N.Y.

The National Surety Company was an early competitor to the United States Fidelity and Guarantee Company in a competition that was characterized by agent raiding and fierce rate wars. William Joyce had apparently promised to deliver business to USF&G following a sellout of National Surety. Instead, the firm was reorganized and Joyce became first Vice President and then President of the National Surety Company. The personal rivalry between USF&G's founder John Randolph Bland and National Surety Company's Joyce led to a twenty year business war that only ended when the two reconciled in 1922, one year before Bland's death.

The medal was given to employees upon their silver employment jubilee.

This circular medal measures 63mm in diameter and was struck in bronze by the Medallic Art Company of New York. No mintage is reported.

Capricornus - Signs of the Zodiac Medal
1967
by Rene P. Chambellan
Pin It...Create Flipcard...Contact Me...
Description

The uniface medal bears mountain goat facing right within bold geometric border.  Around top, CAPRICORNUS; in small exergue at bottom, © MACO 1967

Chambellan's Zodiac medals were issued more than a decade after his death and are probably based on designs he made in the early 1930s when he was working on the RKO Roxy Theater.  The 1960s saw renewed interest in astrology and the signs of the zodiac arising in part from the counter-cultural hippie movement and its subsequent adoption into mainstream culture.

Capricorn is the tenth astrological sign in the zodiac, originating from the constellation of Capricornus. It spans the 270–300th degree of the zodiac, corresponding to celestial longitude. Under the tropical zodiac, the sun transits this area from December 22 to January 19 each year, and under the sidereal zodiac, the sun transits the constellation of Capricorn from approximately January 16 to February 16.

In astrology, Capricorn is considered an earth sign, negative sign, and one of the four cardinal signs. Capricorn is said to be ruled by the planet Saturn. Its symbol is based on the Sumerians' primordial god of wisdom and waters, Enki, with the head and upper body of a goat and the lower body and tail of a fish. Later known as Ea in Akkadian and Babylonian mythology, Enki was the god of intelligence (gestú, literally "ear"), creation, crafts; magic; water, seawater and lakewater.

The circular medal measures 69.7mm in diameter and was struck in bronze by the Medallic Art Company. No mintage is reported.
