This medal was the 28th official issue of the American Numismatic Society. It is a very rare medal and it is not quite clear why it was never offered for sale. The gold pieces were used as award medals and given to the Society's treasurer Charles Pryer and its benefactor J. Sanford Saltus.

The rectangular medal measures 50mm x 89mm and was struck by Alphonse Michaux. The mintage is 2 uniface medals in gold, 2 medals in bronze, and an unknown number of uniface medals in bronze.

Past, Present, Future Calendar Medal
2000

Sterling silver
Description

The medal's obverse bears numbre 2000 on centerfield, with sun moon, and earth doubling up as the zeros in the number. Around, (compass rose) ENLIGHTENED BY THE PAST (compass rose) EMBRACED BY THE PRESENT (compass rose) / EMPOWERED BY THE FUTURE

The reverse bears sun with inscribed 2000; calendar months arranged in segments around center.

My sterling silver piece is numbered on the edge, so at least the sterling variant was editioned. While I have seen the medal in trimillium‒the Franklin Mint's invented material for high-end medals‒I only assume that a bronze version exists.  The design seems to be very intentional about the different finishes, so it is possible that the polished sterling silver variant was the main variant. I would appreciate any additional information that is available for this medal.

The circular medal measures 76mm in diameter and was struck in different metals by the Franklin Mint. No mintage is reported.

Storer was born in Boston, Massachusetts and attended the Boston Latin School, Harvard College, and the Boston (Harvard) Medical School. After obtaining his M.D. in 1853 he traveled to Europe and spent a year studying with James Young Simpson at Edinburgh. He began medical practice in Boston in 1855 with emphasis on obstetrics and gynecology.

In 1857 he started the "physicians' crusade against abortion" both in Massachusetts and nationally, when he persuaded the American Medical Association to form a Committee on Criminal Abortion.

After his retirement from practice in 1872, he became an authority on, and a notable collector of, medallions of medical interest.  He is also the grandfather of Malcolm Storer, the famous numismatic author.

Statue of Liberty Centennial Medal
1986
by Eugene Daub
Pin It...Create Flipcard...Contact Me...
Bronze with seagreen patina
Description

This is the 55th official medal issued by the American Numismatic Society.

The obverse depicts Lady Liberty's serious face, radiant crown dominating upper half of medal. On lower right, 1886 / 1986.

The reverse bears torch with swirling flames. To right, in cursive, Liberty; around lower left, AMERICAN NUMISMATIC SOCIETY; signed at lower right, E. DAUB

This heavy and striking medal was issued by the American Numismatic Society (ANS) in 1985 to commemorate the upcoming centennial of the Statue of Liberty. Eugene Daub created a beautiful ovoid medal that surprises in its design. While the Statue of Liberty is very much a vertical object, the oval medal is in landscape orientation. Daub then picks two of the statue's defining features, the head and the torch, to represent it on the two sides. On the obverse, the face looks sternly at the beholder, as if to remind him of his obligations. On the reverse, the flame of Liberty burns brightly, its promise spelled out on the side.

The silver medals are numbered in two styles. Originally, only 100 silver medals had been ordered and they were numbered XXX/100, for example 001/100. When demand for the silver medal proved strong, an additional 50 pieces were ordered and they are numbered just with their three digit number.

This medal is an ovoid measuring 100mm x 76mm and was struck by the Medallic Art Company. The mintage was 2 pieces in gold, 150 in silver and 500 in bronze.

F. & M. Schaefer Brewing Centenary Medal
1942
by Rene P. Chambellan
Pin It...Create Flipcard...Contact Me...
Description

The medal's obverse bears glass and hand in the center, flanked by the company's headquarters in 1842 and the company's contemporary headquarters. Over buildings, 1842 / 1942; around, OUR HAND HAS NEVER / LOST ITS SKILL; at lower right, signed R. CHAMBELLAN SC.

The medal's reverse bears border of hops and grain around center field with inscription: TO / COMMEMORATE / OUR 100TH YEAR / THE F.&M. SCHAEFER / BREWING CO. / AMERICA'S OLDEST LAGER BEER.

The F.&M. Schaefer Brewery is the longest operating brewery in New York City, the last operating brewery in New York City [as of 1976], and America's oldest lager beer brewing company - all these honors, plus many others, belong to the F. & M. Schaefer Brewing Company.

"F. & M." stands for Frederick and Maximilian, the brothers who founded Schaefer. Frederick Schaefer, a native of Wetzlar, Prussia, Germany, emigrated to the U.S. in 1838. When he arrived in New York City on October 23rd he was 21 years old and had exactly $1.00 to his name. There is some doubt as to whether or not he had been a practicing brewer in Germany, but there is no doubt that he was soon a practicing brewer in his adopted city. Within two weeks of his landing, Frederick took a job with Sebastian Sommers, who operated a small brewhouse on Broadway, between 18th and 19th Streets. Frederick obviously enjoyed both his job and life in America, and the next year his younger brother, Maximilian, decided to make the arduous trip across the Atlantic also. He arrived in June of 1839 and brought with him a formula for lager, a type of beer popular in Germany but unheard of in the United States. The brothers dreamed, and planned, and saved - and in the late summer of 1842 they were able to buy the small brewery from Sommers. The official, and historic, starting date was September, 1842.

In 1981, the F. & M. Schaefer Brewing Company was purchased by the Stroh Brewery Company. In 1999, the Stroh Brewery Company was in turn bought by the Pabst Brewing Company which continues to sell Schaefer Beer today.

This medal measures 76mm (3in) in diameter and was struck by the Medallic Art Company of New York.
