U.S. Mint Chief Coiner Adam Eckfeldt Medal
1839
by Moritz Furst
Pin It...Create Flipcard...Contact Me...
Bronze
Description

The medal's obverse bears bust of Adam Eckfeldt facing right. Around, ADAM ECKFELDT CHIEF COINER U.S. MINT 1814 1839; signed under truncation, FURST. F.

The reverse bears legend, A / FAREWELL TRIBUTE / OF / AFFECTIONATE REGARD / TO / ADAM ECKFELDT / FROM HIS / FELLOW OFFICERS / OF THE / U.S.MINT / 1839

John Adam Eckfeldt (1769-1852) was a worker and official in the early days of the U.S. Mint.  A lifelong Philadelphian, Eckfeldt served as the second chief coiner of the Mint, from 1814 until 1839. Eckfeldth recommended Franklin Peale as his successor and Peale was indeed appointed. Nevertheless, Eckfeldt continued to perform the functions of chief coiner without pay until a few days before his death on February 6, 1852. After Eckfeldt's death, Peale, wrote what Taxay terms a "frantic letter" to Mint Director George N. Eckert, seeking the appointment of an assistant. Peale had spent the freed-up time designing and selling medals for private gain.

While the medal's obverse is designed by Furst, the lettering in the reverse is usually attributed to Peale.

The circular medal measures 51.9mm in diameter and was struck at the U.S. Mint. The mintage is reported to be 1 piece in gold, which was handed to Adam Eckfeldt, 6 pieces in silver, one for each of Eckfeldt's children, and 15 to 25 pieces in bronze which were given to the officers of the U.S. Mint.  This medal is usually referred to as Julian MT-18.

Many thanks to eBay'er caarascup for his permission to use the beautiful images of the silver medal.

Britton I. Budd Medal
1926
by Jeno Juszko
Pin It...Create Flipcard...Contact Me...
Silver
Description

The medal's obverse bears a muscular male figure carrying an unconscious female figure in both arms. Signed above exergue at right, J. Juszko

The medal's reverse bears tree with legend across:  THE BRITTON - I. BUDD / MEDAL - FOR THE / SAVING OF / HUMAN LIFE; in cartouche below, inscribed to EMMETT McSHANE

Britton I. Budd (1871-1965) was dubbed the "electric railroad magnate" of Chicago.  He was Samuel Insull's right-hand man and very good at running transportation and infrastructure companies.

The medal was first awarded in 1926 but I have found newspaper articles from as late as 1952 that mention the award.

Emmett McShane was a resident of Waukegan, Illinois, and received his award in 1928.  I could not ascertain the act of valor that caused him to receive this medal.

The circular medal measures 89mm in diameter and was struck in bronze and silver by the Medallic Art Company of New York.

Goodyear Friendly Relations - 45 Year Medallion
1948
attrib. to Rene P. Chambellan
Pin It...Create Flipcard...Contact Me...
Description

The uniface medallion bears flag with Goodyear logo. From large number at left, around top, 45 - YEARS OF FRIENDLY RELATIONS; under waving flag, incuse, WHATEVER IS BEST / FOR THE CONSUMER / IS BEST FOR THE / DEALER AND THE / MANUFACTURER

This is the 45 year version of Rene Chambellan's Goodyear series of medallions. All of these medallions came mounted to a wooden board to be hung in offices or shops that were selling Goodyear product.

Dick Johnson's reference does not list this medallion under Chambellan, in fact it does not have a reference to it at all. Like all other Goodyear medallions, this one also is not edge-marked, so both the attribution to Chambellan and to the Medallic Art Company are a bit tenuous.  A query to the Goodyear Company has remained unanswered so far.  I'll keep it with the artist and mint attributions until someone with better information can correct the record.

The circular medallion measures 100.8mm in diameter and was struck in bronze by the Medallic Art Company. No mintage is reported.

Charles Lindbergh New York to Paris Medal
1927
by Charles Louis Hinton
Pin It...Create Flipcard...Contact Me...
Bronze
Description

The medal's obverse bears portrait of young Lindbergh, slight right, before sea and sky, sun setting at left. Around upper right, C * LINDBERGH *; across, NEW · YORK - · TO PARIS · IN · / · 33½ HOURS · / MAY 20 · 21 / · 1927 · ; signed above left shoulder, © H

The reverse bears airplane over sea and setting sun, flanked by wings emanating from shell at bottom center. Around top, · · NEW · YORK · TO · PARIS · ; at bottom, · · · c 1927 H · ·

This is one of the more beautiful Lindbergh commemorative medals.  Hinton shows his soft touch in a portrait that reflects both youth and boundless optimism.

The medal measures 70mm in diameter and was struck in bronze and silver. No mintages are reported though I have only encountered the small bronze and the silver medal once, so they appear to be rarer than the large bronze.

Richard Norton Esq. Appreciation Medal
1917
Pin It...Create Flipcard...Contact Me...
Description

The medal's obverse bears portrait of Richard Norton, facing right.

The reverse bears legend. In center field, AMERICAN / RED CROSS / AMBULANCE SECTIONS / PRESENTED TO OUR / CHIEF / RICHARD NORTON ESQ / IN TOKEN OF OUR / ESTEEM AND AFFECTION / OCTOBER 1914 / OCTOBER 1917; around, the names of battles in which the unit participated, ALBERT - HEBUTERNE - CHAMPAGNE - VERDUN - CHEMIN DES DAMES

The American Volunteer Motor Ambulance Corps, also known as the Norton-Harjes Ambulance Corps, was an organization started in London, England, in the fall of 1914 by Richard Norton (1872-1918), a noted archeologist and son of Harvard professor Charles Eliot Norton.

Its mission was to assist the movement of wounded Allied troops from the battlefields to hospitals in France during World War I. The Corps began with two cars and four drivers. The service was associated with the British Red Cross and St. John Ambulance.

The "Harjes" part of the name refers to Henry Herman Harjes, a French millionaire banker who wished to help Norton by donating funds and ambulances. When the United States officially joined the war in 1917, the service had thirteen sections of six hundred American volunteer drivers and three hundred ambulances.

For his service, Richard Norton was awarded the Croix de Guerre, the Legion of Honour, and the Order of St. Lazarus. His award of the Cross of the Legion of Honor was the highest award given to any foreigner by France during World War I.

The bronze medal is neither signed nor does it have any mint marks. It is circular and measures 59mm in diameter. No mintage is reported.
