Goodyear Friendly Relations - 60 Year Medallion
1948
by Rene P. Chambellan
Pin It...Create Flipcard...Contact Me...
Description

The uniface medallion bears two eagles facing three quarters left, perched on streamer with raised GOOD (logo) YEAR inscription.  Below, 60 / YEARS OF / FRIENDLY / RELATIONS

The medallion is unsigned and much ligher than its siblings, much more like a galvano shell than a minted medal.

The medallion is not listed in Dick Johnson's reference and I am not sure that it can really be attributed to Rene Paul Chambellan, but based on the fact that he did all the other medallions in the series I am going to "pencil him in" as the medallions designer.

The medallion measures 104mm in diameter and was in all likelihood manufactured by the Medallic Art Company.  No mintage is reported but, based on my auction experience so far, this is among the rarest of the Goodyear medallions.

The Intrepid Horseman Medallion
1900's
by Adolph A. Weinman
Pin It...Create Flipcard...Contact Me...
Description

This uniface medal bears a boy on a wheeled toy horse resting a cutlass over his shoulder and rogueishly wearing a flappy hat. In exergue, THE · INTREPID / HORSEMAN; signed at left over exergue, FE (AAW monogram) CIT

The medal is mounted on a red velvet stand that can be hung or stood on a desk. Friends of the family reported that Adolph Alexander Weinman's son Robert identified this medal's subject as his brother Howard K. Weinman, who himself became a sculptor later in life. Howard was born in 1901 which would date this medal to approximately 1905-1907. In this medal Adolph Weinman created a loving portrait of one of his sons. It is a very special, personal piece deserving of a place of honor in any collection.

The circular medal measures 97mm in diameter and was struck in bronze.

Second Grinnell Expedition Medal
1857
by Tiffany & Co.
Pin It...Create Flipcard...Contact Me...
Description

The medal's obverse bears William Morton and Hans Hendrik, dressed in cold-weather gear, standing on desolate, rocky shore with Morton pointing at the open sea.

The reverse is coated with a smooth layer of lead.

In 1845 through 1848 Sir John Franklin led the British North-West Passage Expedition to search for a northern ocean passage around the American continent.  Two ships with 129 sailors vanished and their fate remained undetermined years later.  The first Grinnell Expedition was launched in 1850 under the command of Edwin de Haven. While they were successful in locating Franklin's first winter camp, they ultimately had to turn around without having fulfilled their mission of dertmining Franklin's fate.

The Second Grinnell Expedition of 1853-1855 was led by Dr. Elisha Kane, who had already been a member of the first Grinnell expedition. The expedition soon became ice-locked and could not continue but they sent out an exploration team consisting of William Morton and Eskimo guide Hans Hendrik. The two traveled by dog sled and reported that they had found open water, the long sought open polar sea.

Three expedition members died during the return trip and Kane himself never fully recovered from the ordeal. He died in 1857 after having traveled to England to deliver his report to Sir John Franklin's widow.

Tiffany & Co. fashioned a gold medal that was awarded to Kane by the State of New York upon the expedition's return. A silver medal and several coppery bronze medals were also struck.  The bronze medals are always composed from two halves that are joined by lead solder.

The piece depicted here is the obverse half of one of these medals that was obviously never assembled.

The circular medal (half) measures 80.2mm in diameter and was struck in coppery bronze by Tiffany & Co. of New York.  While no mintage is reported, this medal is extremely rare.

The reverse bears laurel and oak branches around central field. Around top, SONS OF ITALY GRAND LODGE; around bottom, STATE OF - NEW YORK; in central field, FOR EXCELLENCE IN ITALIAN / TO / ANGELINA GUARDINA

The Order of the Sons of Italy is the largest and oldest national organization for men and women of Italian heritage in the United States. In 1928 Dr. Sellaro was given the key to the City of New York in recognition of his social and medical achievements.

1921 was the 600th anniversary of Dante Alighieri's death and the medal celebrates both the poet and the Italian language. It was awarded to young students for excellence in Italian. The Italian quote on the obverse is from the 33rd Canto of Dante's Divine Comedy and translates to:

"May your protection curb his mortal passions!"

The medal measures 68.9mm in diameter and was struck by the Medallic Art Company of New York.
