1946-029   George Westinghouse Birth Centennial Medal
1946
by Jeno Juszko, Rene P. Chambellan
Pin It...Create Flipcard...Contact Me...
Description

The medal's obverse bears George Westinghouse, facing right, bent over desk with stylus in his hand. Around top right, GEORGE WESTINGHOUSE CENTENNIAL; across, 1846 / 1946

The reverse bears imagery of industries in which Westinghouse's inventions played a role arrayed around center field; from top left, flight, locomotives, power plants and industrial machines, communications, both wired and wireless. In center field, COMMEMORATING / THE LIFE AND WORK OF / GEORGE WESTINGHOUSE / WHO KNEW THE SCIENTIFIC / USE OF IMAGINATION

George Westinghouse (1846-1914) was an American entrepreneur and engineer based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania who invented the railway air brake and was a pioneer of the electrical industry, gaining his first patent at the age of 19. Westinghouse saw the potential in alternating current as an electricity distribution system in the early 1880s and put all his resources into developing and marketing it, putting him in direct competition with Edison's direct current system.

The medal's obverse was designed by Jeno Juszko whereas the reverse was designed by Rene Chambellan.  Juszko was certainly more of a specialist of portraits and Chambellan excelled at machine age imagery, so that was a good co-production.

The circular medal measures 69.8mm in diameter and was struck in bronze by the Medallic Art Company of New York. No mintage is reported.

1947-023   Goodyear Trophy Race Award Medal
1947
by Rene P. Chambellan
Pin It...Create Flipcard...Contact Me...
Description

The medal bears a flying eagle and nude man, holding GOODYEAR banner in eft and small plane in right, over swirling clouds. Above, NATIONAL AIR RACES; below, GOODYEAR TROPHY RACE; to right, signed (monogram PRC).

Chambellan did a lot of work for Goodyear. In addition to this trophy medallion, he designed several medals for Goodyear dealers and business partners.

It is not known when Chambellan designed this medal but it was first awarded in 1947. The Goodyear Trophy Race was a newly introduced event at the Cleveland National Air Races in 1947. At the end of the first post-war Cleveland National Air Races, a lot of specators had walked out because the ex-military airplanes were too similar and as a consequence the races were not as exciting to watch as the pre-war competitions that had sported highly individual racing airplanes. The organizers resurrected an old idea for small, low-powered, custom-built "midget" airplanes that could race around a smaller track closer to the spectators. The Goodyear Trophy Race was born.

There is no information about the medal itself that I could locate and I would appreciate any help. My copy is mounted an a 268mm x 200mm (10.5in x 7 7/8in) wooden board with a name plate reading ROBERT S. HOPKINS / RACE PLANE BUILDER / 1947.

Goodyear Friendly Relations - 45 Year Medallion
1948
attrib. to Rene P. Chambellan
Pin It...Create Flipcard...Contact Me...
Description

The uniface medallion bears flag with Goodyear logo. From large number at left, around top, 45 - YEARS OF FRIENDLY RELATIONS; under waving flag, incuse, WHATEVER IS BEST / FOR THE CONSUMER / IS BEST FOR THE / DEALER AND THE / MANUFACTURER

This is the 45 year version of Rene Chambellan's Goodyear series of medallions. All of these medallions came mounted to a wooden board to be hung in offices or shops that were selling Goodyear product.

Dick Johnson's reference does not list this medallion under Chambellan, in fact it does not have a reference to it at all. Like all other Goodyear medallions, this one also is not edge-marked, so both the attribution to Chambellan and to the Medallic Art Company are a bit tenuous.  A query to the Goodyear Company has remained unanswered so far.  I'll keep it with the artist and mint attributions until someone with better information can correct the record.

The circular medallion measures 100.8mm in diameter and was struck in bronze by the Medallic Art Company. No mintage is reported.
