1948-045   International Paper Company - Fiftieth Anniversary Medal
1948
by Rene P. Chambellan
Pin It...Create Flipcard...Contact Me...
Description

The medal's obverse depicts a tree in front of waterfall and wilderness in center field. Around, (star) INTERNATIONAL PAPER COMPANY (star) / 1898 - 1948

The reverse bears dedication in center field: Presented to / in recognition of / more than a quarter / century of loyal / service with the / International Paper Company / or its subsidiaries; around, (star) FIFTIETH ANNIVERSARY (star) / 1898 - 1948

The company was incorporated January 31, 1898, upon the merger of 18 pulp and paper mills in the northeastern United States. Its founders and first two presidents were William Augustus Russell and Hugh J. Chisholm. The newly formed company supplied 60 percent of all newsprint in the country.

This is another very nice Chambellan medal that exists in different variants. I know of a Canadian version of this medal that differs in the text on the obverse and the edge design on the reverse.

The medal measures 62mm in diameter and was struck by the Medallic Art Company of New York.

1930-001-041   Man Must Sow to Reap
1950
by Donal Hord
Pin It...Create Flipcard...Contact Me...
Golden bronze with deep olive-brown patina
Description

The medal's obverse bears kneeling American Indian sowing with digging stick; spirits veiling moonlight above. Below, MAN MUST SOW

The reverse bears American Indian seated in solar circle on rainbow holding two ears of corn; fields of ripe corn below. Between corn stalks, TO / REAP; to right, D H / ©

Hord devoted much time to studying ancient and modern Mexican art, spending a full year in Mexico. His choice of a Native American subject came as no surprise to people who knew his work.

In the brochure accompanying the medal Hord wrote:

"The corn planters of America were responsible for the great pre-columbian civilizations and the survival of the early European migrants—hence the Amerindian planting with digging stick in hand on the obverse side. A license was taken in the background— portraying literally 'dark of the moon,' the favorite planting time of our white forebears. The reverse side, the sun above the rainbow, personifies the moisture and heat bringing to fruition the planter's efforts."

This medal was chosen as the 41st issue of the prestigious Society of Medalists series in 1950. Itl measures 73mm in diameter and was struck by the Medallic Art Company of New York. Its reported mintage is 725 pieces in bronze and an unknown number of pieces in silver.

1950-016    Firestone Tire and Rubber Company 50th Anniversary Medal
1950
by Jeno Juszko, Don De Lue
Pin It...Create Flipcard...Contact Me...
Description

The medal's obverse bears portrait of Harvey S. Firestone, facing. To left and right, HARVEY S. / FIRESTONE - FOUNDER

The reverse bears ten scenes relating to Firestone's business arrayed around center field, from rubber tapping at top, to various vehicles, chemical reaction vessels, to airplane.  In centerfield, 50 YEARS / OF / FIRESTONE / SERVICE / 1900 - 1950

Harvey S. Firestone (1868-1938) was an American businessman, and the founder of the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company, one of the first global makers of automobile tires.

After graduating from Columbiana High School, Firestone worked for the Columbus Buggy Company in Columbus, Ohio before starting his own company in 1890, making rubber tires for carriages. In 1900 he soon saw the huge potential for marketing tires for automobiles and then founded the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company, a pioneer in the mass production of tires.

Dick Johnson reports that the medal's obverse was designed by Jeno Juszko but the reverse was designed by Don de Lue! Based on the reverse's subject matter and the style I would have guessed Rene Chambellan, but never Don de Lue.

The medal's edge is drilled at top and bottom so that it can be installed in a spinner, which was a popular display style for industrial commemoratives in the middle of the 20th century.

The circular medal measures 69.4mm in diameter and was struck in bronze by the Medallic Art Company of New York.  No mintage is reported.

Society of Illustrators Award Medal
1950
by Robert Foster, Mario Cooper
Pin It...Create Flipcard...Contact Me...
Description

This medal's obverse bears Bison facing left. Above and below, SOCIETY OF / ILLUSTRATORS; signed with combined (CF monogram)

The reverse bears deeply incuse SI in raised field above panel inscribed with recipient's name: BOB GUCCIONE / ILLUSTRATORS 28

The edge is marked © 1984 MEDALLIC ART CO. - DANBURY, CT. - BRONZE

The Bison shown on the face of this medal is adapted from the wall painting in the cave of the Font-de-Gaume at Les Eyzies in Southern France and was one of man's earlier art efforts. The species of Bison, now almost extinct, differs somewhat from the North American form, with a rather small head and not so much fur over the head, neck and shoulders.

The medal was awarded to Bob Guccione, the founder of Penthouse Magazine, and a painter and illustrator. While he is best known for founding Penthouse Magazine, he originally only started the magazine to subsidize his career as a well-respected visual artist.

The circular medal which was designed by Robert Foster and sculpted by Mario Cooper measures 76mm in diameter and was struck in bronze by the Medallic Art Company.

Many thanks to Richard Berenson, a past president of the Society iof Illustrators, who sent me most of the information about this medal.
