1930-001-052   Hans Christian Andersen
1955
by Georg John Lober
Pin It...Create Flipcard...Contact Me...
Golden bronze with light tan patina
Description

The medal's obverse bears head of Danish writer ad story teller facing left. Around, HANS . CHRISTIAN . ANDERSEN; below, 1805 (flower) 1955; below truncation; GEORG LOBER / ©.

The reverse bears swan swimming right. Around, ONE . HUNDRED . AND . FIFTIETH . ANNIVERSARY; below water, G L / (flower) / ©.

This medal was chosen as the 52nd issue of the prestigious Society of Medalists series in 1955. This is the first SOM medal that stepped away from philosophical or abstract themes to commemorate specific events or individuals. George Dupont Pratt, one of the SOM founders, had tried to set the Society apart from common practices by discouraging commemorative designs but Lober picked a figure that was different from the usual honorees. As one commenter wrote:

"While I am not partial to commemorative medals, I like this one... It is a pleasant change to have a medal commemorating the simple things in life rather than heroism, statesmanship or political achievement."

The circular medal was struck by the Medallic Art Company of New York. The reported mintage is 681 pieces in bronze and an unknown number in silver.

1955-054   Dodge & Olcott Achievement Award
1955
by Robert A. Weinman
Pin It...Create Flipcard...Contact Me...
Description

The obverse bears seated Ceres, goddess of Plenty, holding cornucopia in right and cradling seated calf at her left; around edge, pig, sheep, chicken and cow. Around inside of center field, DODGE & OLCOTT ACHIEVEMENT AWARD; at bottom in small cartouche, D.& O / ESTABLISHED (????)

The reverse bears inscription FOR / OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTION / TO THE GROWTH & WELFARE / OF THE MEAT PACKING INDUSTRY / AWARDED / TO / (cartouche) / 19 (cartouche)

While Dodge & Olcott were mainly known as a chemical firm that created basic ingredients for perfume and apothecary needs, they also seemed to have a presence in the agricultural sector. I was not able to track down any public news articles relating to this award but D&O sponsored scholarships for promising agrichemical students.

This medal measures 76mm in diameter and was struck by the Medallic Art Company of New York.

1930-001-54   Walt Whitman
1956
by Paul Fjelde
Pin It...Create Flipcard...Contact Me...
Deep brown patina
Description

The medal's obverse bears head of of middle-aged, bearded Walt Whitman facing left. Around, OUT OF THE CRADLE ENDLESSLY ROCKING / 1819 WALT WHITMAN 1892; below truncation, P.©F.

The reverse bears singing thrush on flowering lilac. Below, Leaves of Grass / First Publication / 1855.

Walt Whitman (1819-1892) was was an American poet, essayist, and journalist. A humanist, he was a part of the transition between transcendentalism and realism, incorporating both views in his works. Whitman is among the most influential poets in the American canon, often called the father of free verse. His work was very controversial in its time, particularly his poetry collection Leaves of Grass, which was described as obscene for its overt sexuality.

This medal was chosen as the 54th issue of the prestigious Society of Medalists series in 1956. It was the second SOM commemorative medal and it was less well received than the first one. Members seemed willing to tolerate an occasional commemorative medal but they were wary of a trend. As one member wrote:

"somewhat disappointed in that it is another commemorative as opposed to strictly artistic subject (abstract, allegorical, etc.)."

The circular medal measures 73mm in diameter and was struck in bronze and silver by the Medallic Art Company of New York. The reported mintage is 635 pieces in bronze. The number of silver pieces is not reported but the edition was limited to 700.

1956-009   75th Anniversary of Thos. Leeming & Co. Medal
1956
by Adlai S. Hardin
Pin It...Create Flipcard...Contact Me...
Description

The medal's obverse bears bearded man kneeling at suffering man's side, supporting him with one hand and holding a cup in the other. Around, ALLEVARE - SEDARE / SANARE

The reverse bears legend, THOS. LEEMING & CO., INC. / 75TH / ANNIVERSARY / 1881 - 1956 / PHARMACEUTICAL SPECIALTIES

Thomas Lonsdale Leeming (1837-1902) was born in England and spent his childhood in Canada. He took charge of the family's Canadian business, Thomas Leeming & Co., and began a drug import business in New York with exclusive rights to a number of pharmaceutical products. Joseph Leeming (1869-1906) and Thomas Lonsdale Leeming, Jr.(1873-1925) together with their father constituted the firm of Thomas Leeming & Co and the Montreal house of Leeming Miles & Co. They were also managers of the American house of the Swiss Nestlé Company, around 1900.  In 1961, the Thomas L. Leeming Company was sold to Pfizer.

This medal's obverse is based on figures from The Healers, an oaken bas relief Hardin created for the Stamford Hospital. Allevare Sedare Sanare roughly translates to "lighten slake cure," at least one of which every medical compound should be able to achieve.

1956-020   Art Institute of Chicago Logan Medallion
1956
by David Smith
Pin It...Create Flipcard...Contact Me...
Description

The medallion's obverse bears a modern sculpture.  Above, THE ART / INSTITUTE OF CHICAGO / MR. AND MRS. FRANK G. LOGAN MEDAL

The reverse bears more abstract sculpture.

The Logan Medal of the Arts was an arts prize initiated in 1907 and associated with the Art Institute of Chicago, the Frank G Logan family and the Society for Sanity in Art. From 1917 through 1940, 270 awards were given for contributions to American art.

The Medal was named for arts patron Frank Granger Logan, founder of the brokerage house of Logan & Bryan, who served over 50 years on the board of the Chicago Art Institute. He and his wife, Josephine Hancock Logan, administered the award consistent with their patronage of the Society for Sanity in Art, which they founded in 1936, and the theme of her 1937 book Sanity in Art. The Logans strongly opposed all forms of modern art, including cubism, surrealism, and abstract expressionism. It was not unknown for the Society of Sanity in Art to award a prize (e.g. in 1938 to Rudolph Ingerle) in competition with the official award by the exhibition prize committee of a prize the Logans had already sponsored.

This medal's design seems to run quite contrary to the Logans' artistic preferences. I don't quite understand how an obviously abstract design ended up on a medal bearing their name.  Maybe someone can shed light on this mystery.

The circular medallion measures 81.8mm in diameter and was struck in bronze by the Medallic Art Company of New York. No mintage is reported.
