1968-030   Prestressed Concrete Institute Award Medal
1968
by Ralph J. Menconi
Pin It...Create Flipcard...Contact Me...
Description

The medal's obverse bears diverse precast concrete construction element. Around, A NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF THE DESIGN, MANUFACTURE AND USE OF PRESTRESSED CONCRETE AND PRECAST CONCRETE / · FOUNDED 1954 ·

The reverse bears architectural view of a concrete bridge. Across, PRESTRESSED CONCRETE INSTITUTE - PCI / ARCHITECTURAL - STRUCTURAL

As the prestressed industry grew in the early 1950s, it became apparent that a central organization was essential to provide a unity of purpose in the industry. PCI was legally chartered as the Prestressed Concrete Institute on June 18, 1954, in Tampa, Florida. In December 1959, PCI moved its headquarters from Florida to Chicago, where it is based today.

This design is very different from Menconi's usual work. It is almost abstract in its simplicity, whereas his normal style is very traditional. I like this medal a lot.

The oval medal measures 88.6mm x 60.2mm and was struck in bronze by the Medallic Art Company of New York.  No mintage is reported.

Description

The medal's obverse bears bust of Sidney Licht facing left. Around bottom, · SIDNEY · LICHT ·M·D·

The reverse bears staff of Aeskulap with snake in center field; to its left, four symbols in circles; to its right, ASKLEPIOS in greek letters. Around edge; AMERICAN CONGRESS OF REHABILITATION MEDICINE / 1967 PRESIDENT 1968; around inner edge of beaded center field, EDITOR AND HISTORIAN OF PHYSICAL MEDICINE · HUMANIST · EDUCATOR / INTERNATIONALIST · PHYSICIAN · INNOVATOR

Sidney Licht (1908-1979) was born in New York City and practiced at Mount Sinai Hospital, Sea View Hospital, and Beth Israel Hospital. He discovered his life's passion in rehabilitative medicine when working with the many World War II veteranswho struggled both physically and mentally with reintegration into civilian life. He and his wife Elizabth became key contributors to the young medical specialty of rehabilitative medicine.

He was a long-time member and served as President of the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine from 1967 to 1968. The ACRM awards a prize honoring both Sidney Licht and his wife Elizabeth, who was the publisher of the Physical Medicine Library. The Elizabeth and Sidney Licht Award recognizes excellence in scientific writing in rehabilitation medicine. Only articles presenting potentially significant empirical and theoretical contributions to rehabilitation medicine, and demonstrating soundness of methodology and data analysis are considered for the award.

Paul Manship designed this medal before his death in 1966 and did not live to see it issued. The circular medal measures 76.2mm in diameter and was struck in bronze by the Medallic Art Company of New York.

1968-136   Chicago Coin Club 50th Anniversary Medal
1969
by Trygve A. Rovelstad

Silver
Description

This medal's obverse bears modernized head of Arethusa, wearing winged and eagle-headed helmet with motto I WILL, facing left. Around, C · C · C · 50TH · ANNIVERSARY - 1919 1969; signed under truncation, © T · A · ROVELSTAD · 1968

The reverse bears the six Winter Hexagon stars and Betelgeuse in the middle. Around edge, CHICAGO · COIN · CLUB / DOCENDO DISCIMUS; inside stars, conjoined CCC logo surrounded by ORGANIZED 1919 · / INCORPORATED 1938; signed with (TR monogram)

The 50th anniversary of the Chicago Coin Club was celebrated January 8, 1969 with a banquet at Harding's Restaurant. The 77 in attendance had only one regret - that the bad weather kept many away. Trygve Rovelstad had been asked to create the corresponding anniversary medal and picked the head of his proposed Arethusa statue for the design. The medal's reverse was designed to be usable for future Club medals. Apparently, a quantity of nickel-silver and silver uniface medals were struck to have a cache of engravable medals on hand.

This is a very handsome medal and definitely one of the nicest Coin Club issues of modern times. Too many coin clubs issue medals with relatively boring busts of club presidents whereas this design is truly worthy of being immortalized on a medal.

The circular medal measures 57mm in diameter and was struck in bronze and silver by the Medallic Art Company of New York. The reported mintage is 182 pieces in bronze and 113 pieces in silver. The bronze medals originally cost $5 and the the silver medals $20 and were sold to members only.
