He was a psychiatrist who wanted to create a publication that melded the three facets of a physician's life—the professional, the human being, and the member of society—so that they might "then look at life with the eyes of a scientist and at medicine with the eyes of the artist."

The circular medal measures 76.2mm in diameter and was struck in bronze by the Medallic Art Company of Danbury, Connecticut. No mintage is reported.

Description

The medal's obverse bears abstract shapes, possibly resembling a person.

The reverse bears lengthy legend, MANAGING PEOPLE / · To provide the climate / and resources that will enable all staff / members to advance on merit as far as their / talents and skills will take them, / without regard to age, / handicap, marital status, national origin, / race, religion, or sex · To offer / pay and benefits that are / fair and competitive · To make certain that / ideas, concerns, and problems are / identified and that two way com- / munication is effectively maintained / · To provide and environment that identifies, / encourages, and rewards excellence / and innovation · To remember / always that respect for human dignity is / fundamental to our success / (cross in circle)

I would venture the guess that the aspirational message on this medal was written by a committee.  I can't help but compare and contrast it with the Lincoln medals' "malice towards none" quotes. While I like the abstract motif on the obverse, the whole medal leaves a bit of a bland taste. A medal just should not be a powerpoint presentation.

The medal measures 63.4mm x 63.5mm and was struck in bronze by the Medallic Art Company of New York. No mintage is reported.

National Education Association Global Education Medal
1976
Pin It...Create Flipcard...Contact Me...
Description

This medal's obverse bears an open hand holding a Reuleaux triangle with inscribed letter π and arrow head; longitude and latitude grid in background, spanning the entire medal.

The reverse bears same hand and globe with superimposed legend. Around top, NATIONAL EDUCATION ASSOCIATION; across, A DECLARATION / OF / INTERDEPENDENCE / EDUCATION / FOR / A GLOBAL COMMUNITY / 1976

This is a very thick, heavy medal, weighing in at almost 250g. I assume that the thickness was a design element, making the medal slightly more three dimensional and spherical to stress the "globe" design element.

I know neither the artist nor the mintage and would appreciate additional information, also about the event at which this medal was handed out or awarded.

The circular medal measures 62.4mm in diameter and was struck by the Medallic Art Company of Danbury, Connecticut. No mintage is reported but it is numbered at the 12 o'clock edge, so it probably had a somwhat smaller edition size.

New York State Bicentennial Medal

Bronze
Description

This medal's obverse bears upper body of colonial soldier wearing tricorne and holding musket. At left, 1776 / (ANS seal); at right, 1976; signed at bottom, Americo

The reverse bears Liberty pole with ribbons attached; at lower right, the seal of Ne York State. On ribbons, Liberty / New York State American Revolution / Bicentennial / 1776 1976

This medal was the 51st official medal issued by the American Numismatic Society in 1976.  It was struck in six different variants.  Five variants were struck by the Medallic Art Company of Danbury, Connecticut, the silver proof variant as struck by the Franklin Mint.  Beyond sponsoring the design competition in 1972, the American Numismatic Society really had limited input into and no control of the production of this medal. No mintages are reported for any of the variants.  At least the bronze pieces are very common and the the silver pieces don't seem to be too uncommon. The only rare variant is probably the gold 25mm piece which I have only seen at auction once in five years.
