1986
by Marcel Jovine, John Oliva
Pin It...Create Flipcard...Contact Me...
Description

The medal's obverse bears walking immigrant family, faces turned upwards in silent awe. Across, the famous lines from Emma Lazarus: GIVE ME / YOUR TIRED, YOUR / HUDDLED - MASSES / YEARN-ING TO / BREAT-HE FREE. / THE WR-ETCHED / REFUSE - OF YOUR / TEEMING - SHORE. SE/ND THEESE, - THE HOME/LESS, TEM-PEST-TOST / TO ME. - I LIFT / MY LAMP - BESIDE / THE GO-LDEN / DOOR. Signed at bottom right, (JOV monogram)

The medal's reverse bears Statue of Liberty's head in center; at its right, 19 / 86; signed over left shoulder with (JOV monogram); twelve segments with months around.

In reference to the Statue of Liberty's nickname, this medal is also known as the "Mother of Exiles" medal.

The calendar panel was engraved by John Oliva.  Jovine designed and sculpted both sides but left the area of the calendar panel empty in what is called a "reserve." Oliva then added the calendar panel with all the month name and number lettering.

This circular circular medal measures 76mm in diameter and was struck in bronze and possibly silver by the Medallic Art Company of Danbury, Connecticut.

Many thanks to CJ Swinko for the excellent photos.

Description

The uniface medal bears image of PPG Place in Pittsburgh with cathedral-like structures in background. On right, PPG / PLACE; in exergue, BLOUNT

The edge is marked ©1984 MEDALLIC ART CO. - DANBURY, CT. - BRONZE

Based on the date it is likely that the medal celebrates the completion of the PPG Place development. The office space opened in August 1983, just two and a half years after the construction began. The gleaming glass and steel structures, known worldwide for their breathtaking design, were developed by John Burgee Architects with the internationally renowned architect Philip Johnson from New York.

The medal was struck in bronze by the Medallic Art Company of Danbury, Connecticut. No mintage is reported.

Description

The medal's obverse bears portrait of Luis Munoz Marin, facing left. Signed at right, Batista _ 1987

The reverse bears Marin's signature in recessed center field; below, 1980; around, · FUNDACION LUIS MUNOX MARIN · / PUERTO RICO; signed (TB monogram) 1980

José Luis Alberto Muñoz Marín (February 18, 1898 – April 30, 1980) was the first governor of Puerto Rico, journalist, politician, and statesman, regarded as the "Father of Modern Puerto Rico" and the "Architect of the Commonwealth."

In 1948 he was the first democratically elected Governor of Puerto Rico, spearheading an administration that engineered profound economic, political and social reforms; accomplishments that were internationally lauded by many politicians, statesmen, political scientists and economists of the period. Marin was instrumental in the destruction of the Nationalist party and its efforts to gain independence.

After his death from complications of a severe fever he suffered at age 82, his funeral became an island-wide event, dwarfing his own father's funeral in 1916, and attended by tens of thousands of followers.

The circular medal measures 76.4mm in diameter and was struck in bronze by the Medallic Art Company. No mintage is reported.

1986-175   Eagle Calendar Medal
1987
by Marcel Jovine
Pin It...Create Flipcard...Contact Me...
Bronze
Description

The medal's obverse bears eagle, wings spread, holding branch in talons, facing right. Signed at bottom right, (JOV monogram)

The medal's reverse bears eagle's head in center; under beak, 19 / 87; twelve segments with months around.

1987 was the Bicentennial Year of the U.S. Constitution.  While the anniversary is not explicitly mentioned on the medal, I would not be surprised if the choice of the Eagle were a nod to Jovine's adopted country.

This circular circular medal measures 76mm in diameter and was struck in a variety of materials by the Medallic Art Company of Danbury, Connecticut. No mintages are reported.

Many thanks to CJ Swinko for the excellent photos of the bronze variant.
