Usage Guidance

You can browse medals by artist, series, or locate the medals via the glossary page. All of these top-level pages are reachable via quick links in the menubar at the top. If you can't locate a medal that way, try using a search engine of your choice by entering text on or prominent features of the medal and constraining the search to this website. More detailed help is available here.

Keyboard Navigation

As on all pages, you can use SPACE to scroll down and Shift-SPACE to scroll up. Up and down arrows also work.

Known Issues

Sometimes a page does not want to scroll down. Reloading it has always fixed this problem for me.

Medallic Art Collector

IntroductionAcknowledgementsFAQsLegal

Thanking people on a website or in a book is always a risky enterprise because scatterbrained people like me always forget someone and then there are hard feelings about the omission. In this particular case, I am already looking back at four years of history and I have not kept a list of site collaborators or people who have been helpful in other ways.

So, to cut a long story short, if you have helped me along the way and I did not list you, please come forward and let me know that I forgot you and I will rectify it.

While they are on the list, I have to stress the contributions of a few authors on whose giant shoulders this website rests: David T. Alexander, Dick Johnson and Scott H. Miller. So much of this website is based on their research that I would have to acknowledge them just about everywhere. Instead, I do it here and only point out in a few places where I have some questions about details.

Without further ado and in no particular order, my thanks go to:

  • My wife, who has suffered through my medallic obsession without complaint and only gentle amusement,
  • My daughter, who helped me with artist research and wrote some of the biographies,
  • David T. Alexander, who provided in-depth research and an example of how to do it through his wonderful book "American Art Medals 1909-1995" and also gave me encouragement through email,
  • Dick Johnson, without whose reference works I would never have been able to identify so many medals,
  • Scott H. Miller, for his wonderful book "Medallic Art of the American Numismatic Society, 1865-2014",
  • Joseph Levine of Presidential Coin & Antique, who has sold me many treasures and has always been willing to share his expertise with me,
  • Paul Bosco, in whose store I have spent way too much money,
  • Bob Jaeger from Renaissance Man Antiques, who has granted me the use of images and praised my efforts,
  • Chris Bach, a fellow collector who has shared images and knowledge,
  • Elizabeth Helms of the National Sculpture Society, who has done research on NSS medals on my behalf and been a pleasure to deal with,
  • Brian Holt, who allowed me the use of several ANS medal images,
  • the creator of sallyjamesfarnham.org for his medallic images and the great artist biography,
  • Chrystopher J Spicer, my first true collaborator who has volunteered to enter a bunch of Scandinavian artists and some of their medals,
  • Lorraine Burns, for her help with documenting Albino Manca's beautiful Henry Hering Memorial Award,
  • Harry Waterson, for his help with all things Julio Kilenyi,
  • Loree Bourgoin, Sue Joffray, and Diana Atwood Johnson from Lyme Academy for their help with Elisabeth Gordon Chandler's record,
  • Bob Slawsky for granting me the right to use images from his eBay store,
  • Elsa Atson from the Chemical Heritage Foundation for researching the history of Chambellan's Lammot DuPont Safety Award plaque,
  • Igor A. Osipov, a dedicated medal collector from Russia who is not afraid to voice opinions and helps out when he can,
  • Kevin Nolan, a descendant of Ruth Walker Brooks who sent me a lot of information about her,
  • Stephen Carofalo, for his help with documenting the Holland Society medals.
