Paul Fjelde was born to Jacob and Margarethe Fjelde on August 12th, 1892 in Minneapolis, MN. Jacob Fjelde had already been a well-known sculptor in Norway when he emigrated to the United States in 1887. Unfortunately, Fjelde's father died at the young age of 36 and newly widowed Margarethe moved the family to Burleigh County, North Dakota where they homesteaded.
Fjelde studied art at the State Normal School in Valley City, now the Valley City State University. Later he studied under Chicago-based sculptor Lorado Taft. His sculptural education was completed at the Minneapolis School of Art, the Beaux-Arts Institute of Design, the Art Students League of New York, the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere in Paris.
During his long career Fjelde taught at the Pratt Institute of Art and was a professor emeritus from that institution. He also served as chairman of the Sculpture Department at the Carnegie Institute of Technology and was an instructor of sculpture at the National Academy Museum and School of Fine Arts. Between 1951 and 1955 he was editor of Sculpture Review.
