The Mauna Kea Beach Hotel was developed by by Laurance S. Rockefeller and designed by Edward Charles Bassett for the firm Skidmore, Owings and Merrill. It opened on July 24th, 1965. Originally operated by Rockefeller's company RockResorts, it was sold several times. In the 2006 earthquake it sustained severe damage and had to be closed for two years.
The circular medal measures 70mm in diameter and was struck in bronze by the Medallic Art Company of New York. The mintage is not reported.
