"Ducit amor patriae" roughly translates to "Love of country leads me."

The cicular medal measures 69.5mm and was struck in bronze by the Medallic Art Company of New York. No mintage is reported.

Dick Johnson's fabulous medallic reference lists this medal as produced by Whitehead-Hoag. It is possible that the medal was struck by both companies at different times.

L. Bamberger & Co. Store Opening Medal
1912
Pin It...Create Flipcard...Contact Me...
Description

The medal's obverse bears view of L. Bamberger & Co.'s Newark flagship store.

The reverse bears legend within wreath, L. BAMBERGER Co. / NEWARK, N.J. / 1893 - 1912

Louis Bamberger (1855-1944) was born in Baltimore and came to Newark in 1892.  He purchased the bankrupt dry goods emporium Hill & Craig at auction. and renamed it L. Bamberger & Company. Under Bamberger’s leadership,  the store became very successful.  In 1912 he opened the first section of his completely redone store to the public. This is the event commemorated by this medal.  He eventually sold his empire to Macy's, which kept the Bamberger brand alive till 1986.  The Newark store was finally closed in 1991.

The circular medal measures 74.6mm in diameter and was probably struck by Whitehead & Hoag of Newark, New Jersey, but I can't be sure because the medal bears neither an artist's signature nor maker's marks.  Any additional information would be welcome.

The circular medal measures 63.4mm in diameter and was struck in bronze by the J. F. Newman Company of New York. While no mintage is reported, Harry Waterson estimates it to be around 500 because the medal was a present at a dinner with 500 invited guests.  A bronze uniface variant with a diameter of 62.9mm exists in unknown mintage.

Beth Israel Hospital Tercentenary Medal
1928
by Jonathan M. Swanson
Pin It...Create Flipcard...Contact Me...
Description

The medal's obverse bears seated nude female at right holding a cup of water to seated nude male's mouth. At top left hebrew letters, at right, artist's signature (JMS monogram)

The reverse bears a view of the new hospital under star of David. In exergue, BETH ISRAEL HOSPITAL / NEWARK · NEW JERSEY / · FEBRUARY · 1928 ·

When Beth Israel was founded in 1901 it was located in a former residence on High Street. The hospital grew and prospered along with the Jewish community that supported it. Eventually a grand new building was raised on Lyons Avenue in the Weequahic section. This move confirmed that the Weequahic section had become the center of Jewish community life in Newark. The medal pictured along with this blog was made to mark the opening of the new hospital building.

This is a very beautiful and somewhat rare Swanson medal in Art Nouveau style. At least one large galvano is known to exist. The hebrew letters on the obverse spell an excerpt from the book of Exodus 15:25: "for I am the Lord that heals you."

The circular medal measures 75mm in diameter and was struck in bronze by the Medallic Art Company of New York. The mintage is not reported.
