Beverly Hospital Medal
1930
by Cyrus E. Dallin
Pin It...Create Flipcard...Contact Me...
Description

The medal's obverse bears frmale nurse, kneeling left, playing with naked baby lying on ground. Around, · BEVERLY HOSPITAL · / INCORPORATED - 1893; signed at lower right, Dallin / 1930

The reverse bears a one-mast sailing ship, sailing left to right. Around left top, HANDICAP RACE; engaved, CLASS II · 1929; in cartouche under ship, engraved to SKIPPER; in exergue, 7

The dates on this medal are somewhat confused.  Cyrus E. Dallin himself dates it 1930 on the medal and this is also the year that Dick Johnson's reference lists for this medal.  On the other hand, the reverse has the medal awarded to SKIPPER in 1929, the year before the medal was supposed to be designed. My best guess is that the medal was used as a belated award for a charitable boat race that actually took place the previous year.

The medal measures 57.2mm in diameter and was struck by the Gorham Manufacturing Company of Providence, Rhode Island, in what appears to be gold-plated bronze. No mintage is reported.

American Cancer Society Award Medal
1949
by Rene P. Chambellan

Description

The obverse bears tunic-wearing hero with shield and sword slaying snake-like dragon with thrust through winding neck. The shield bears the American Cancer Society's logo. Above, AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY AWARD; signed below shield with artist's (RC monogram).

I could not locate an exact date for this medal but it looks like it was first awarded in 1949, so Rene Chambellan probably designed it in 1948. Any additional information would be highly welcome.

The medal is struck in bronze by Tiffany & Company as well as the Medallic Art Company of New York.

American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists Medal
1951
Pin It...Create Flipcard...Contact Me...
Description

The medal bears kneeling mother holding infant up into the air for a kiss. Around, · AMERICAN COLLEGE of OBSTETRICIANS & GYNECOLOGISTS; at left, 1951

The style and subject matter tend to make me want to attribute the medal to Abram Belskie, who designed a lot of medals for medical colleges and practitioners and did a lot of his best work in this late art deco style.

The circular uniface medal measures 64mm in diameter and was struck in a greyish metal, probably lead. It is likely a trial strike of a medal I have not yet identified.

by Adlai S. Hardin

Description

The medal's obverse bears bearded man kneeling at suffering man's side, supporting him with one hand and holding a cup in the other. Around, ALLEVARE - SEDARE / SANARE

The reverse bears legend, THOS. LEEMING & CO., INC. / 75TH / ANNIVERSARY / 1881 - 1956 / PHARMACEUTICAL SPECIALTIES

Thomas Lonsdale Leeming (1837-1902) was born in England and spent his childhood in Canada. He took charge of the family's Canadian business, Thomas Leeming & Co., and began a drug import business in New York with exclusive rights to a number of pharmaceutical products. Joseph Leeming (1869-1906) and Thomas Lonsdale Leeming, Jr.(1873-1925) together with their father constituted the firm of Thomas Leeming & Co and the Montreal house of Leeming Miles & Co. They were also managers of the American house of the Swiss Nestlé Company, around 1900.  In 1961, the Thomas L. Leeming Company was sold to Pfizer.

This medal's obverse is based on figures from The Healers, an oaken bas relief Hardin created for the Stamford Hospital. Allevare Sedare Sanare roughly translates to "lighten slake cure," at least one of which every medical compound should be able to achieve.

Frank H. Krusen Plaque
1960
by Paul Manship
Pin It...Create Flipcard...Contact Me...
Description

The plaque bears portrait of Frank H. Krusen, facing right. Above, · FRANK · H · KRUSEN · M · D · ; below, · 1960 ·

Frank H. Krusen (1898-1973) was an American physiatrist. He is regarded as a "founder" of the field of physical medicine and rehabilitation. He founded the first Department of Rehabilitation at Temple Hospital in 1928.

This plaque is not signed and not listed in Murtha's reference on Manship's works, but it comes from the artist's estate and the is unmistakably a Manship work.  Gilroy Roberts designed a Krusen medal for the Connecticut Society of Physical Medicine in the same year.  Maybe Manship submitted this design to the Society and they picked Roberts' or maybe he just wanted to honor him separately, unrelated to the Society's medal issue.

Ciné Clinic Participation Medal
1962
by Joseph Di Lorenzo
Pin It...Create Flipcard...Contact Me...
Description

The obverse bears masked and gowned surgeon pulling a suture with surgical tool. Over shoulder along edge, CINÉ CLINIC.

The reverse bears dedication between laurels: Presented By / DAVIS & GECK / DIVISION OF / AMERICAN CYANAMID COMPANY / FOR PARTICIPATION IN / THE CINE CLINIC PROGRAM OF / THE AMERICAN COLLEGE / OF SURGEONS.

The medal is edge-marked MEDALLIC ART CO.N.Y. BRONZE.

The surgeon is rendered in loving detail and very high relief, originally making me believe that it was a medal by Abram Belskie, known for his loving and detailed renditions of medical subjects.  Dick Johnson's reference corrected my mistaken belief.

The medal measures 75.9mm (3in) and was struck in bronze by the Medallic Art Company of New York. No mintage is reported.
