J. Walter Thompson Centennial Medallion
1964
Pin It...Create Flipcard...Contact Me...
Bronze
Description

The obverse bears a reproduction of the Lidov Mural in the JWT headquarters building. At top, JWT.

The reverse shows a representation of the areas in which JWT was active in 1964. Above, J. WALTER THOMPSON COMPANY; below, 1864 - 1964.

From the romance brochure that accompanied the medallion:

"The J. Walter Thompson Company began its operations in the advertising field in 1864. The world population at that time was 1,144,000,000, and advertising was not a major factor in the affairs of men.
Today, as we enter our second century, the world population is three billion, and advertising has become a potent economic force.
J. Walter Thompson moves into its future with the expression of its belief in the depth and searching restlessness of the human mind and spirit."

The Lidov Mural is permanently installed in JWT's headquarters building in New York City. It was commissioned by JWT and completed in 1964 to symbolize the communications among the four races of man.

The oval medallion measures 76.8mm x 51.5mm and was struck by the Medallic Art Company of New York. No mintage is reported.

Fritzsche Brothers 75th Anniversary Medal
1946
by Rene P. Chambellan
Pin It...Create Flipcard...Contact Me...
Description

The uniface medal bears Demeter, Greek goddess of Agriculture, aided in her efforts by Sun, Sea, and Soil, bearing bundles of grain; scientist and chemical laboratory equipment in background.  Around, FRITZSCHE BROTHERS, INCORPORATED / 1871 · SEVENTY-FIFTH · ANNIVERSARY · 1946

Fritzsche Brothers was established on August 28, 1871, at 62 Cedar Street, New York City, as a subsidiary of chemical maker Schimmel & Co., of Leipzig, Germany, for the purpose of importing and selling essential oils. After more than 80 years in business the company sold itself to Dodge & Olcott, which in turn was bought by German chemical giant BASF, which then sold the unit off to Givaudan.

The anniversary medal bears the design of a previously inaugurated Fritzsche Brothers award medal.  As the brochure accompanying the medal explained, combining Demeter with a modern scientist symbolizes the chemical industry's higher purpose of "converting Nature's bounty to the needs of Man."

The medal usually comes mounted on a wooden paperweight. Establishing the weight and potential edge markings would require the object's disassembly, which I didn't want to do. If anyone has a loose medal and can take the measurements, I'd appreciate the missing data.

Passage of Time Medal
1977
by Yves Beaujard, Ernest Lauser, Vincent Miller
Pin It...Create Flipcard...Contact Me...
Bronze
Description

The medal's obverse bears old man and youth's heads combined into Janus head in center. Around, a symbolic evolutionary circle starting with the sun at the top and continuing via lower life forms at the right to lion at the bottom and chain of technological achievements at left, all the way to atoms, leading back to the sun. Signed on truncation of Janus head, EL

The reverse bears calendar panel in center with chain of human life stages from baby at top right to old man at left. At top, 1977; signed at right bottom of calendar panel (VM monogram)

Both sides of the medal deal with the passage of time.  The Janus head is the traditional symbol for the transition from one year to the other.  The obverse deals with evolution and epochal time periods while the reverse deals with the stages of a human life and the process of aging.

While the medal's pamphlet claims that the obverse was designed by Don Everhart II and sculpted by Ernest Lauser, Don Everhart denies ever having worked on this medal. I tend to believe that he knows best what medals he worked on and just hope that the remainder of the information is more accurate.

The reverse was designed by Yves Beaujard and sculpted by Vincent Miller.

The circular medal measures 76mm in diameter and was struck in bronze and silver by the Franklin Mint. No mintages are reported.  The silver variant was issued in a limited edition but I do not know the limit.

Prince of Wales Medal
1919
by John Flanagan
Pin It...Create Flipcard...Contact Me...
Bronze
Description

The obverse bears portrait of Edward, Prince of Wales, in uniform, facing right. Around, EDWARD PRINCE OF WALES; at bottom right, heraldic badge over circled (JF monogram).

The reverse displays allegorical female figure flanked by two vertical oak branches. To left of figure, COMMEMORATING / THE VISIT OF / HRH THE PRINCE / OF WALES / TO THE / UNITED STATES / NOVEMBER / MCMXIX / A N S (with oak leaves).

This was the 41st medal overall and the fourth medal issued by the American Numismatic Society (ANS) in 1919, a very productive year for the Society as far as medals were concerned. J. Sanford Saltus, the great benefactor of American Medallic Art, provided not only funds covering the costs of design and die creation, but also enough money to strike one copy in gold. That copy was presented to the Prince of Wales during a ceremony on board the battleship Renown. In addition to ANS members, the privilege of subscribing to the medal was extended to the Pilgrims of the United States.

The medal measures 63.3mm in diameter and was struck by the Medallic Art Company of New York. The reported mintage is 1 piece in gold, 145 in silver, 227 in bronze, and 1 in brass (made for the British Museum).
