Man Must Sow to Reap
1950
by Donal Hord
Pin It...Create Flipcard...Contact Me...
Golden bronze with deep olive-brown patina
Description

The medal's obverse bears kneeling American Indian sowing with digging stick; spirits veiling moonlight above. Below, MAN MUST SOW

The reverse bears American Indian seated in solar circle on rainbow holding two ears of corn; fields of ripe corn below. Between corn stalks, TO / REAP; to right, D H / ©

Hord devoted much time to studying ancient and modern Mexican art, spending a full year in Mexico. His choice of a Native American subject came as no surprise to people who knew his work.

In the brochure accompanying the medal Hord wrote:

"The corn planters of America were responsible for the great pre-columbian civilizations and the survival of the early European migrants—hence the Amerindian planting with digging stick in hand on the obverse side. A license was taken in the background— portraying literally 'dark of the moon,' the favorite planting time of our white forebears. The reverse side, the sun above the rainbow, personifies the moisture and heat bringing to fruition the planter's efforts."

This medal was chosen as the 41st issue of the prestigious Society of Medalists series in 1950. Itl measures 73mm in diameter and was struck by the Medallic Art Company of New York. Its reported mintage is 725 pieces in bronze and an unknown number of pieces in silver.

National Export Exposition Medal
1899
by August C. Frank
Pin It...Create Flipcard...Contact Me...
Description

The medal's obverse bears seated Franklin, facing half right. Around, NATIONAL EXPORT EXPOSITION

The reverse bears wreath and legend, AWARDED / BY THE / NATIONAL / EXPORT EXPOSITION / TO / (engraved Partrick Carter & Wilkins) / ON RECOMMENDATION OF THE / FRANKLIN INSTITUTE / PHILADELPHIA / 1899

The National Export Exposition ran from September 14, 1899 to November 30, 1899 and was intended to provide

"... a complete display of American manufactures and products suitable for export, [...] unlike any Exposition heretofore held or projected."

It was supported by Congress, various Chambers of Commerce, Boards of Trade, and other corporate interests, as well as the city of Philadelphia and private citizens. In essence, it was an international industrial fair to demonstrate American goods to an international audience, but also to give American manufacturers easier access to international manufacturing technology.

The circular medal measures 50.7mm in diameter and was struck in silver by the August C. Frank Company of Philadelphia.

Catholic War Veterans Building Dedication Medal
1967
by Patrick Whitaker
Pin It...Create Flipcard...Contact Me...
Description

The medal's obverse bears view of the Memorial building. Around, · DEDICATED AUGUST 1967 · / CATHOLIC WAR VETERANS OF THE U.S.A.; under building, WASHINGTON,D.C.

The reverse bears legend within beaded border. Around, GOD · · · COUNTRY · · · HOME / · · · (cross with laurels) · · ·; across center, OUR DEAD / · ARE NOT · / UNKNOWN / SOLDIERS

The Monsignor Edward J. Higgins Memorial Building is located at 2 Massachusetts Avenue in Washington, D.C., and was dedicated in August 1967, a time when America was heavily involved in the ever more unpopular Vietnam war.

I can't be sure, but the legend on the reverse can be read as a gesture of defiance by the Catholic War Veterans against both the government's handling of the war and the public's increasing lack of support for veterans.

The circular medal measures 63.6mm in diameter and was struck in bronze by the Medallic Art Company of New York.  No mintage is reported.
