New York World's Fair Land of Lincoln Pavilion Medal
1964
Pin It...Create Flipcard...Contact Me...
Description

The medal's obverse bears bust of Lincoln, facing, within thick border.

The reverse bears the seal of the state of Illinois. Around, LAND OF LINCOLN PAVILION / 1964 NEW YORK WORLD'S FAIR 1965

Illinois had its own pavilion at the New York World's Fair of 1964-65 and this medal was one of the commemoratives offered there.

The medal is fairly two-dimensional, the recessed areas of the relief together with some patina used to provide dark patches, and it almost looks like it was etched.  The edge is cross-hatched.

The circular medal measures 69.1mm in diameter.  I have no information about artist, mint or mintage.  Any additional information would be appreciated.

Fire and Ice
1990
by Eugene Daub
Pin It...Create Flipcard...Contact Me...
Description

This medal was chosen as the 121st issue of the prestigious Society of Medalists series in 1990. The obverse bears a rugged, bearded face left, in high relief, merging with swirls of flame.

The reverse bears a craggy bearded visage dripping with ice.

Daub explained his intent in the accompanying message "From the Artist":

"Joy - Suffering, Hot - Cold... everything in life is held in balance between extremes. Opposites! These powerful forces go back and forth in cycles. The medal is the ideal medium for this theme because of the two opposing sides of the medal."

The medal is struck in copper, giving the "Fire" side a natural flame color. The "Ice" side is silver-plated, giving it a cold, frozen look, particularly when contrasted with the obverse. Did the message inspire the medal or vice versa? Regardless, Daub did a wonderful job in using two metals to enhance the message.

This medal is an irregular oval measuring 74mm x 64mm and was produced by the Medallic Art Company. Production was not reported but the edition was limited to 2,500 pieces.

IBM Hundred Percent Club Medal
1964
by Joseph Di Lorenzo
Pin It...Create Flipcard...Contact Me...
Description

The medal's obverse bears square with inscribed IBM / HUNDRED / PERCENT / CLUB 1963; around, · IBM ELECTRIC TYPEWRITER DIVISION · IBM ELECTRIC TYPEWRITER DIVISION

The reverse bears view of IBM's pavilion at the New York World's Fair of 1964/65, family of three in front. Around, · NEW YORK WORLD'S FAIR 1964-1965 · NEW YORK WORLD'S FAIR 1964-1965

The New York World's Fair of 1964/65 was a fair with huge corporate participation.  Many large companies had pavilions there and IBM was one of them.

The younger generation that has grown up with word processors might not understand how big a deal electric typewriters were. Instead of mechanical typewriters' direct translation of a key stroke into a typed letter, the IBM electric typewriter recorded a typed letter into a small buffer that it showd in a small display strip.  This allowed the typist to review up to one line of typing and correct changes before they ended up on paper. Later models also had a delete key that automated the process of overtyping a letter in white. Such machines were exremely exciting and certainly worthy of being admired at a World's Fair!

The circular medal measures 50mm in diameter and was struck in bronze by the Medallic Art Company of New York. No mintage is reported.

St. Louis Lindbergh Banquet Medal
1927
by Julio Kilenyi
Pin It...Create Flipcard...Contact Me...
Bronze
Description

The obverse bears standing female figure, arms raised, holding fleur-de-lis in her right and U.S. shield in her left, facing left; to her left, Statue of Liberty; to her right the Eiffel Tower; above, Linbergh's plane. Signed at lower right, KILENYI

The reverse bears Lindberghs Spirit of St. Louis over cloud=shrouded globe with his historic flight route marked as a dotted line. Below, COMMEMORATING / THE FIRST NEW YORK-PARIS FLIGHT / BY CAPT. CHARLES A. LINDBERGH / "SPIRIT OF ST. LOUIS / NEW YORK MAY 20TH PARIS MAY 21ST 1927

Lindbergh's historic flight captured the world's interest like few other events and he was celebrated as a hero wherever he went. His return to St. Louis, the city for which he had named his plane, was a triumph. A large celebratory banquet was organized and bronze versions of this medal were handed to every attendee.

While the bronze pieces are relatively common, the silver and gold variants are exceedingly rare. The one gold piece was presented to Captain Charles Lindbergh at the dinner in his honor and the silver pieces probably to people involved with the flight and maybe dinner organizers.

The medal measures 83.2mm in diameter and was struck in bronze, silver, and gold by Whitehead-Hoag of Newark. The reported mintages are 1 piece in 14k gold, 25 in silver, and 2000 in bronze.

Yosemite National Park Medal

Description

This uniface medal's obverse bears bust of Native American chief in feather headdress facing right. Around right side, YOSEMITE NAT'L PARK

The reverse bears maker's mark ROBBINS CO / ATTLEBORO / MASS

This beautiful medal bears no signature and no date. The design and craftsmanship make me believe that it was done by one of the better known medallists but I would really appreciate to get some data on this piece. I would date it no later than the 1940s, but I could be totally wrong.

The Oyster's Pearl - 75th Anniversary
2006
by Stanley Bleifeld

Silver-plated bronze
Description

The obverse bears oyster shell extending beyond round medal's edges. Above, BROOKGREEN / GARDENS; below, SOUTH CAROLINA

The reverse bears small rendering of Anna Hyatt Huntington's iconic Fighting Stallions in hollow of opened shell. Above, 75th YEAR; below, 1931 - 2006

This was the 34th of the prestigious Brookgreen Gardens member medals, issued in 2006.

I was not aware that the Brookgreen medals came in variants until I acquired the copper variant at auction from the collection of Don Young. The copper variant is much rarer than the silver-plated variant, in fact I have only seen it once.

The irregularly circular medal measures 83mm x 76mm and was struck by the Medallic Art Company. No mintage is reported.

American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists Medal
1951
Pin It...Create Flipcard...Contact Me...
Description

The medal bears kneeling mother holding infant up into the air for a kiss. Around, · AMERICAN COLLEGE of OBSTETRICIANS & GYNECOLOGISTS; at left, 1951

The style and subject matter tend to make me want to attribute the medal to Abram Belskie, who designed a lot of medals for medical colleges and practitioners and did a lot of his best work in this late art deco style.

The circular uniface medal measures 64mm in diameter and was struck in a greyish metal, probably lead. It is likely a trial strike of a medal I have not yet identified.
