Visit of Epitacio Pessoa Reverse Design
1919
by Paul Manship
Pin It...Create Flipcard...Contact Me...
Description

The galvano bears two cornucopias above open scroll flanked by female figures standing on winged spheres; figure at left bearing caduceus, figure at right burning torch; at bottom, two dolphins. On scroll, To commemorate / the visit of / President elect / EPITACIO / PESSOA / of BRAZIL / to the / UNITED STATES / of AMERICA / 1919

This was a design for the reverse of a medal commemorating the visit to the United States in 1919 of Dr. Epitacio M. Pessoa, president-elect of Brazil. Dr. Pessoa had been the Brazilian representative at the armistice negotiations in Versailles and on his return he visited the United States. He arrived in New York City, then traveled to Boston and Washington, D.C., where he made ceremonial appearances meant to solidify relations between Brazil and the United States.

It is fascinating to contrast this design with the one on the finished medallion:  the flanking figures change sex and orientation, they carry different props, a ship is added at the bottom, and the lettering changes.

The galvano measures 79.8mm in diameter.

Society of Illustrators Award Medal
1950
by Robert Foster, Mario Cooper
Pin It...Create Flipcard...Contact Me...
Description

This medal's obverse bears Bison facing left. Above and below, SOCIETY OF / ILLUSTRATORS; signed with combined (CF monogram)

The reverse bears deeply incuse SI in raised field above panel inscribed with recipient's name: BOB GUCCIONE / ILLUSTRATORS 28

The edge is marked © 1984 MEDALLIC ART CO. - DANBURY, CT. - BRONZE

The Bison shown on the face of this medal is adapted from the wall painting in the cave of the Font-de-Gaume at Les Eyzies in Southern France and was one of man's earlier art efforts. The species of Bison, now almost extinct, differs somewhat from the North American form, with a rather small head and not so much fur over the head, neck and shoulders.

The medal was awarded to Bob Guccione, the founder of Penthouse Magazine, and a painter and illustrator. While he is best known for founding Penthouse Magazine, he originally only started the magazine to subsidize his career as a well-respected visual artist.

The circular medal which was designed by Robert Foster and sculpted by Mario Cooper measures 76mm in diameter and was struck in bronze by the Medallic Art Company.

Many thanks to Richard Berenson, a past president of the Society iof Illustrators, who sent me most of the information about this medal.

Beverly Hospital Medal
1930
by Cyrus E. Dallin
Pin It...Create Flipcard...Contact Me...
Description

The medal's obverse bears frmale nurse, kneeling left, playing with naked baby lying on ground. Around, · BEVERLY HOSPITAL · / INCORPORATED - 1893; signed at lower right, Dallin / 1930

The reverse bears a one-mast sailing ship, sailing left to right. Around left top, HANDICAP RACE; engaved, CLASS II · 1929; in cartouche under ship, engraved to SKIPPER; in exergue, 7

The dates on this medal are somewhat confused.  Cyrus E. Dallin himself dates it 1930 on the medal and this is also the year that Dick Johnson's reference lists for this medal.  On the other hand, the reverse has the medal awarded to SKIPPER in 1929, the year before the medal was supposed to be designed. My best guess is that the medal was used as a belated award for a charitable boat race that actually took place the previous year.

The medal measures 57.2mm in diameter and was struck by the Gorham Manufacturing Company of Providence, Rhode Island, in what appears to be gold-plated bronze. No mintage is reported.
