IBM Hundred Percent Club Medal
1964
by Joseph Di Lorenzo
Pin It...Create Flipcard...Contact Me...
Description

The medal's obverse bears square with inscribed IBM / HUNDRED / PERCENT / CLUB 1963; around, · IBM ELECTRIC TYPEWRITER DIVISION · IBM ELECTRIC TYPEWRITER DIVISION

The reverse bears view of IBM's pavilion at the New York World's Fair of 1964/65, family of three in front. Around, · NEW YORK WORLD'S FAIR 1964-1965 · NEW YORK WORLD'S FAIR 1964-1965

The New York World's Fair of 1964/65 was a fair with huge corporate participation.  Many large companies had pavilions there and IBM was one of them.

The younger generation that has grown up with word processors might not understand how big a deal electric typewriters were. Instead of mechanical typewriters' direct translation of a key stroke into a typed letter, the IBM electric typewriter recorded a typed letter into a small buffer that it showd in a small display strip.  This allowed the typist to review up to one line of typing and correct changes before they ended up on paper. Later models also had a delete key that automated the process of overtyping a letter in white. Such machines were exremely exciting and certainly worthy of being admired at a World's Fair!

The circular medal measures 50mm in diameter and was struck in bronze by the Medallic Art Company of New York. No mintage is reported.

Vice Admiral Jerry Land Medal
1952
by Paul Manship
Pin It...Create Flipcard...Contact Me...
Description

The medal's obverse bears bust of Jerry Land facing right in circular center field. Around, THE VICE ADMIRAL "JERRY" LAND / MEDAL / (star) (star) (star) THE SOCIETY OF (star) (star) (star) / NAVAL ARCHITECTS AND MARINE ENGINEERS

The reverse bears organization's logo flanked by two dolphins over cartouche and streamer. In cartouche, FOR OUTSTANDING / ACCOMPLISHMENT IN THE / MARINE FIELD; signed between folds of streamer, PM

The Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers was founded in 1893 as a U.S. engineering society.  Today, the group has members in almost every seafaring and offshore energy nation and has various international chapters known as sections.

The medal was named for Vice Admiral Emory S. "Jerry" Land and is awarded for "Outstanding Accomplishment in the Marine Field." Awardees need not be members of the organization. It has been awarded annually since its inception in 1952 when it was awarded to Vice Admiral Land himself.

Emory S. Land (1879-1971) was an officer in the United States Navy, noted for his contributions to naval architecture, particularly in submarine design. Notable assignments included serving as Chief of the Navy's Bureau of Construction and Repair during the 1930s, and as Chairman of the U.S. Maritime Commission during World War II. He was awarded the Navy Cross for his work on submarine design and construction and for work in the war zone.

The hexagonal medal measures 50.7mm x 72.7mm, including the loop. It was struck in gold-plated bronze by the Medallic Art Company of New York. No mintage is reported.

Sterling silver
Description

The medal's obverse bears numbre 2000 on centerfield, with sun moon, and earth doubling up as the zeros in the number. Around, (compass rose) ENLIGHTENED BY THE PAST (compass rose) EMBRACED BY THE PRESENT (compass rose) / EMPOWERED BY THE FUTURE

The reverse bears sun with inscribed 2000; calendar months arranged in segments around center.

My sterling silver piece is numbered on the edge, so at least the sterling variant was editioned. While I have seen the medal in trimillium‒the Franklin Mint's invented material for high-end medals‒I only assume that a bronze version exists.  The design seems to be very intentional about the different finishes, so it is possible that the polished sterling silver variant was the main variant. I would appreciate any additional information that is available for this medal.

The circular medal measures 76mm in diameter and was struck in different metals by the Franklin Mint. No mintage is reported.

Barry Faulkner Medallion
1915
by Paul Manship
Pin It...Create Flipcard...Contact Me...
Description

The medallion's obverse bears portrait of Barry Faulkner in beaded center field; small bird ti his left. Around, · (rosetta) · BARRY · FAULKNER ·  (rosetta) · / · PAINTER ·  (rosetta) · MCMXV ·

The reverse bears nude Orpheus with lyre pursuing nude, winged Eurydice. Around, · TO · THE · ULTIMATE · DO · WE · PURSUE · THE · IDEAL · ; signed under lyre, · PAUL · MANSHIP ·

Barry Faulkner (1881-1966) was an American artist primarily known for his murals. During World War I, he and sculptor Sherry Edmundson Fry organized artists for training as camouflage specialists (called camoufleurs), an effort that contributed to the founding of the American Camouflage Corps in 1917.

Faulkner and Manship had both been students at the American Academy in Rome from 1909 to 1912. They also both had studios in the Cape Anne area of Massachusetts. This medallion was apparently used as an award medal by the Rockport Art Association.

The circular medallion measures 89.4mm in diameter and was cast in bronze. No production quantity is reported.

Conserve Wildlife
1938
by Gertrude K. Lathrop
Pin It...Create Flipcard...Contact Me...
Red-gold bronze with yellow-tan patina
Description

The obverse shows wood duck preening, new fern fronds uncurling in background. Around, CONSERVE WILD LIFE; in lower right, signed G.K.LATHROP / ©

The reverse bears a kneeling pronghorn with large barrel cactus behind.

Gertrude Lathrop was an early environmentalist. She was deeply concerned with preserving wilderness and wildlife and railed against inhumane traps, farmers who killed predators, the use of furs in fashion, indiscriminate use of poisons, and the slaughter of entire species of birds and animals.

She chose the wood duck because it was endangered by the draining of wetlands and the pronghorn because by 1938 the only exemplars to be found lived on reservations.

This medal was chosen as the 18th issue of the prestigious Society of Medalists series in 1938. It measures 73mm in diameter and was struck by the Medallic Art Company of New York. Its reported mintage is 1,025 pieces in bronze and 100 in silver.
