Walter Kidde was born in 1877 and graduated from the Stevens Institute of Technology in 1897. At the age of 23 Walter Kidde started Walter Kidde & Company. During his time there, he oversaw the first traffic circle in Camden, the first clover-leaf intersection and most importantly the Pulaski Skyway in 1932.
Though he started out in the construction business, the company took a different turn and grew into a fire suppression equipment manufacturer. Kidde & Company had perfected carbon dioxide-based fire extinguishers and became a big supplier for industrial buildings and the military.
Walter Kidde died in 1943, seven years before this medal was commissioned to celebrate the company he had created.

The medal's obverse bears a portrait of Goodnow, facing right. Signed on truncation, M. Miller sc.
The reverse bears the Johns Hopkins University seal framed by ivy. Across lower half, TO / FRANK · JOHNSON · GOODNOW / PRESIDENT · 1914-1929 / FROM · HIS · COLLEAGUES / JUNE · 11 · 1929
Frank Johnson Goodnow (1859-1939) was an educator and legal scholar. Born in Brooklyn, New York, he attended Amherst College and Columbia Law School. After graduation he was offered a position in the School of Political Science on the condition that he prepare himself with a year of study abroad. He met that requirement by enrolling at the Ecole Libre des Sciences Politiques in Paris and at the University of Berlin. After teaching for more than two decades, assisting with the drafting of a new charter for Greater New York, and drafting two consitutions for China, he became president of Johns Hopkins University in 1914. For the next fifteen years he worked on improving Johns Hopkins' financial position and finally retired in 1929.

The medal's obverse bears frmale nurse, kneeling left, playing with naked baby lying on ground. Around, · BEVERLY HOSPITAL · / INCORPORATED - 1893; signed at lower right, Dallin / 1930
The reverse bears a one-mast sailing ship, sailing left to right. Around left top, HANDICAP RACE; engaved, CLASS II · 1929; in cartouche under ship, engraved to SKIPPER; in exergue, 7
The dates on this medal are somewhat confused. Cyrus E. Dallin himself dates it 1930 on the medal and this is also the year that Dick Johnson's reference lists for this medal. On the other hand, the reverse has the medal awarded to SKIPPER in 1929, the year before the medal was supposed to be designed. My best guess is that the medal was used as a belated award for a charitable boat race that actually took place the previous year.
The medal measures 57.2mm in diameter and was struck by the Gorham Manufacturing Company of Providence, Rhode Island, in what appears to be gold-plated bronze. No mintage is reported.

The medal's obverse bears horse-drawn fire wagon racing down a street from right to left. In exergue, FIRE DEPARTMENT / CITY OF NEW YORK
The reverse shows the fire department's coat of arms in oval field, flanked by sprigs of laurel and oak. Around, THE JOHN H. PRENTICE MEMORIAL MEDAL FOR VALOR ·; across, AWARDED TO / WILLIAM M. J. YATES / FIREMAN 1ST GRADE H. & L. CO. No. 4 / 1934; signed at bottom, TIFFANY & CO
This rare medal has been awarded since 1920 for acts of valor by New York City fire fighters. I could not find out much about either Mrs. Prentice or Yates. Mr. Prentice seems to have been a Brooklyn official. I would love to document Mr. Yates' act of valor that caused him to receive this medal. Maybe someone with connections to the FDNY can help out with information.
My medal has been pretty badly abused. In addition to the gouges, scratches, and nicks, it also had its loop removed. Normally, the medal is looped and worn on a ribbon.
The circular medal measures 49mm in diameter and was struck in 14kt gold by Tiffany & Co. of New York City.

The uniface medal's obverse bears a Morgan horse in profile, facing left. Around, THE MORGAN HORSE; signed at left next to horse's chest, LAVRA GARDIN / FRASER 1923 / ©
The edge is marked MEDALLIC ART CO NY
This is a later variation of the original Morgan Horse Club medal that was used as an award medal by the American Morgan Horse Association (AMHA). I do not know whether Laura Gardin Fraser herself modified the die for the obverse or whether that was done later by someone else. Any additional information about this medal is welcome.
